Re: Francie McIlduff's Pipes
Yes and no - Benedict made a chanter for John when his old set was stolen. Made from some brown wood. This he used for a while, and ordered another made from box. Now he has, and uses, the boxwood Koehler chanter. Clearly he sold the brown one. Apparently the MacAloon chanter is 'sat on the bench'. ...

Re: What's the white thing?
I'm not sure,
But i suspect if you left a peeled turnip in the sun long enough it might look a bit like that.

Re: Francie McIlduff's Pipes
John's new set is indeed a Benedict Koehler chanter and Coulter body, and i believe he's still using that even though he has the old set back. However, this clip is a few years old and that's the MacAloon chanter with Williams body. I believe Frankie McIlduff plays a Rowsome chanter, actually maybe ...

Re: New Case
I agree it's a bit long for carry on according to the 'rules' for most airlines but i travel a lot with fiddle players/viola players who use cases around this size, or even bigger for 2 fiddles. Usually no problems. To be honest I wasn't thinking too much of flying with it, just needed a new case. L...

New Case
Hi Another solution to the case problem - i just got one of these - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350590771325#ht_2621wt_949 First impressions are positive. It's a viola case made of glass fibre but all the 'viola shape' bits are just velcroed in - so you can take them out...

Re: Back D in the stratosphere
PJ, My guess when that happens is that the bridle is in the wrong place, probably too high up the head, making it act much stiffer. For example, occasionally in a loud session i have raised the bridle on my reed to make the chanter louder, albeit taking more air, and have had to tape the D hole to c...

Re: Robbie Hughes Reed Dimensions
There was a guy passed through Newcastle a few years ago who's name i'll remember later played one of these. With Riverdance at the time. Anyway His chanter sounded ACE and bang in tune although i think he'd messed a good bit with the holes/flatted the front off etc. But anyway his reed looked HUGE ...

These are going to look really cool.
Are they also a copy internally, or purely aesthetically?
Tell us what the materials are as well - guessing ebony, nickel silver, box?

Hi Fergus,
Have you used the Rogge thread?
Is it flat in section or round?
Looking for a source of the flat stuff.
Cheers

Hope all's good with you

Re: Anyone know where to buy mammoth ivory in the uk??
Exactly. As Rory points out, if you use old elephant ivory and rework it then you can't cross any borders with the finished instrument without risking having it confiscated- and i suppose you're not really allowed to sell it either. Mammoth appears to be the only legal way to have ivory on a new set...

Re: Reed problem: no C-natural
I had this problem with some of my reeds a while ago and got some very useful advice on this forum. Basically the reeds magically fixed themselves as i continued to work them down with the knife. But more specifically i found that working the bottom of the scrape from a V to more of a U seemed to ca...

Re: Which chanter to buy?
??? No big deal ! its just your "great news" reminded me of Oscar night when all the nominees hide their disappointment by smiling politely and applauding even when the other guy wins. For once wouldn't you like to see some actor jump up and start ranting on that the oscar should be his/h...
