Staple for a hughes and macleod chanter?

Hi board, Reeding up one of these for a mate. I've got good tone/response and lower 8ve tuning just with 50mm hobby tube but i'm thinking there's a better solution for the top octave. Poor e, sharp top b etc etc. So before i start trying to re-invent the wheel i thought i'd ask on here!! Anyone got ...

Re: sharp bottom D and E

Hi I wouldn't have thought so really, but if you've a few reeds, then chop one off and see if it helps? My guess - and it is only a guess - something is too small/closed, you need some more internal volume somewhere. Try opening the reed and see if it helps those notes, although granted it will prob...

F sharp too eager!!

Hi I'm trying to reed up a Cillian O'Brien chanter. So far it has been mostly a success - it's in tune up to high D, and has a decent attempt at the hard and soft low Ds and Es. E off the leg is pretty sharp i guess. But the main problem i'm having is that the F sharp note is very eager to play in t...

Re: unknown chanter

Hi.

Is that the practice set was for sale lately, purple bag cover?

If so then

- i think that's my reed, and
- yes i thought that too.

Cheers

p.s. If the Morrison pattern border pipes are anything to go by, this isn't going to be a mid priced alternative to anything....

Re: McCallum getting into uilleann making

Well i know a guy that bought the Koehler chanter from Fred last year, so he's definitely not using that anymore, wonder what he's switched to now? Ted - not to doubt you but are you sure Fred's Williams is one of the Crowley copies? I ask because talking with Tiarnan O'D this summer he reckoned his...

Re: McCallum getting into uilleann making

Did Paddy Keenan play a Williams chanter for a while? He plays a K&Q chanter now but IIRC, he had Dave copy his Crowley set back in the late 90s, and he still plays the Williams set (sans chanter). If that timing's right I wonder if he recorded "The Long Grazing Acre" on the Williams ...

Re: McCallum getting into uilleann making

Fraid to say that's not the Williams chanter in the clip but a one by Benedict Koehler.

Fred has had a few different chanters over the past few years - at least 2 by Williams, a Froment, and the Koehler you see there.

Still, interesting to see what they come up with!!!

Re: Tuning advice please

Yes it's difficult to say without trying/seeing the thing. But i wonder if your reed is too closed up? Can you be bothered to blow a bit harder? If so then open it using the bridle and this should at least improve the over-sensitive G but in some cases i have found a too-closed reed can make the low...

Re: Bag Type and Regs

I just recently got a new bag from Jackie which i believe is his Rowsome shape. It's great - only good things to say. Pretty big like. The neck was around 1 1/2 inches longer than my previous bag but before i cut it off i thought to just try it - you can always cut later. I find it better to reach t...

Re: Ebay Items

I'm 95% sure that the practice set for sale there is from Pakistan originally. I recognise it as it passed through my workshop maybe 7 years ago, when it belonged to a friend of mine. I did a few bits and bobs, re-hemping, replacing valves, fitted a hinge to the bellows as there wasn't one, made a r...
