Re: Attribution to old tunes

Maybe, but often attribution in old collections meant something different - it could have been an arrangement, it could have just been for words, or it could have been completely erroneous. At any rate, I always try to research if tunes are found in older collections, which usually invalidates the ...

Attribution to old tunes

Hi All, I was looking through and old collection of tunes, 2000 medodies, pub J Parry, 1843, when I came across two tunes I knew, but with attributed composer names. So I thought I would share them with you. The Fairy Boy https://i.ibb.co/6DTn1Yg/fairy-boy.png S Lover https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S...

New Book on C18th century Pastoral/ Union pipes and music

Hi. I am player of Swayne Low D pipes. I have just finished a research project, following a possible route of the development of Pastoral/Union Pipes, in the C18th. It also looks at the link between pipes and the Theatre. It is illustrated with contemporary illustrations, and has 102 tunes arranged ...

New Book about piping in the C18th

Hi. I lurk quietly here, being a player of Swayne Low D pipes, and having an interest in Irish music. I have just finished a research project, following a possible route of the development of Pastoral/Union Pipes, in the C18th. It also looks at the link between pipes and the Theatre. It is illustrat...

Re: Munster Gimlet

For my eyes, although it scans as written, it works better as 9/8.

Munster Gimlet

Hi All, With reference to the above tune, which is know by this title from the playing of Patsey Touhey, I found the tune below, in an anonymous C19th MS in the Vaughn Williams Memorial Library at Cecil Sharp House, London. Clearly miss barred as 6/8, it has a close resemblance to Munster Gimlet. Ha...

Re: 'Piping of Patsy Touhey' book

This is probably a long shot, but I'm hoping someone might have a copy of The Piping of Patsy Touhey by Pat Mitchell and Jackie Small that they might be willing to part with? Please PM me. Thanks Rick Rick, I wanted a copy and contacted NPU. They said they could make me a copy for £25.00. They were...

It is from an Edinburgh publication c1790's http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j199/piperdave/Downfall_zpsd9u4wp2f.png A little searching and I seem to have answered my own question  so here is that answer. Re: The Bright Lady/An Ainnir Gheal

Myles, for the record, the book I quoted was O'Neill's 1,850 tunes, the big yellow one. This was not printed in 1850, but in approximately 1900.

A fascinating book in many respects, as it allows comparison of tunes collected in the USA with native collections.

All the best,

Dave
