Re: Sharp 2nd octave, can it be cured ?.
I haven't been to this forum for years and just came here today with this very second octave issue. It's driving me nuts. I'm ready to just give up reed making. Reeds I make last around 6 months, so I'm not back at the workbench very often. I get rusty, out of practice, then very frustrated when it ...

Re: reedmaking prob
Maybe not gouged straight?
If I understand this problem, I have done this when I didn't hold the slip perfectly perpendicular to the sanding cylinder.

Re: treating reeds
I've made reeds using Neets in the process. I work the cane up to the point where I was ready to tie it onto the staple. Then I would dip the cane in Neets foot oil, wipe off the excess and let the cane dry over night. Next day (or the next time I got the reed making kit out), I would give the insi...

treating reeds
I have followed threads on treating reeds before and wanted to see if there were any new ideas floating out there. I have never tried treating my reeds with kerosene, clear nail polish, or neatsfoot (sp?) oil. Would shellac be a candidate for treating a reed against humidity? What other sorts of thi...

Re: Reed storage?
The climate in Quebec is very similar to up-state NY and I've played the same chanter reed since Feb 2009. My bass drone gets a little unpredictable when the winter starts so I usually change the reed (and change back in late spring). The other reeds require a little adjustment but nothing radical....

Re: Reed storage?
I end up making a new reed at just about each change of seasons fall and spring. I live in a climate (eastern Adirondacks of New York State U.S.) that has extremes in temperature and humidity. I just accept it as part of the piping thing.

Re: G first octave
I wonder if it could be the chanter, not the reed?
Those of us who started out on GHB are pretty comfortable with tape. Nice thing about tape is it can be moved during a gig as the chanter changes.

Re: UPReeds.com site is down
Thank you so much for putting up this wonderful site!
I'm doing a big batch of reeds this week (in <30% humidity) and it's an easy reference to access, well-designed and copious.
