Re: THE F (Band) Flute Thread
Here's one I've had for several years now, restored by Daniel Deitch for Buy And Sell music in Eugene, OR, from whom I bought it. It has no distinguishing markings, but great tone. I'm not exactly sure what wood it is. In person it's more yellow/gold than cocus tends to be. I was told it might be st...

Re: I birthed a new tune...
I just can't see why you'd want to write tunes that sound like a thousand others That isn't what I said, now, is it? If you can write a tune that sounds like it could be a trad Irish tune, that means you've got an ear for what a trad Irish tune sounds like. Whereas the best trad composers... ... al...

Re: I birthed a new tune...
I'll rephrase that. By playing a self-composed tune you reveal a lot about your understanding of Irish music. I'd much rather hear one that sounds like a genuine Irish tune than one that sounds like Iron Maiden.

Re: I birthed a new tune...
Most of the time when I hear someone's self-composed tunes, they end up self-consciously putting so much "originality" into them that they end up with something far out of character with Irish music. IMO if you accidentally write a jig reminiscent of an old tune then you're probably on the...

Re: Severe ivory restrictions coming.....and it *will* hurt
It's not meant to be a criticism of anyone in this thread, but if that's what CITES has to offer, that's scary. At the very least I don't think it'd be very helpful to anyone who can't already identify different types of ivory.

Re: Severe ivory restrictions coming.....and it *will* hurt
I think that's all well and good if you have a magnifying glass and a tusk in front of you. I don't think it'd be so helpful when you've got a flute ring or carving you're trying to identify.

Re: Severe ivory restrictions coming.....and it *will* hurt
How easily distinguishable are different types of ivory? Type of animal, fossilized or not, etc?
Somehow, I've only ever (knowingly) seen 3-4 pieces of ivory in my life, and never more than one at a time.

Re: Unidentified Bamboo Flutes
This isn't conclusive but in searching Denny's posts for "bamboo," I see that he had some William Miller bamboos. No mention of Woodsong. http://forums.chiffandfipple.com/search.php?keywords=bamboo&terms=all&author=denny&sc=1&sf=all&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&st=0&a...

Re: Unidentified Bamboo Flutes
If the F isn't an Olwell, my guess would be Woodsong. The fingerhole offsets might be a clue. I had a few woodsong bamboo flutes before I took up Irish, and they were nice instruments. No marking other than the key (on the closed end, I believe) http://woodsonginstruments.com/flute.php I had an Olwe...

William - I guess these are you mic clips? https://www.shapeways.com/shops/williamb They look good, very simple and effective, I imagine they're nice in Black Strong & Flexible. Yes, that's them. I printed one in that material and one in polished white strong & flexible. That one is smoothe...

Re: Custom made tuning ring and end cap for Tipple flute
I have 3D-printed a fife using Shapeways' "string and flexible" material. It plays OK, but is not terribly exciting. That particular material is somewhat porous and I have been warned that moisture will degrade it over time. I also made a model of a flute I own that I wanted to have 3D pri...

This is probably the same video Mr. Gumby linked to, but accessible to us outside out Ireland. Same tune, at least.

Re: Playing by ear vs learning by ear
I am not a fan of the idea of a session class, but if you have learned to play along competently at a session on tunes you know, then I would say mission accomplished. The session class has taught you how to play at a session, now you're ready to move on. If you want to be able to start tunes and pl...
