Re: measuring bore..any diy methods?

Dave Quinn has some excellent papers on his CD ROM. Get one. Easy way is as Dave Boling said, and I have done so with a brass rod with plastic inserts turned to precision diameter pairs, one round and the other oval. You can measure with a machinist ruler or get fancy with a DRO.

Re: Second octave e not sounding cleanly

From Pat Sky's book: Problem: There is a squawk in the 2nd octave E Play it: As you go to the high E try increasing the pressure and see if the squawk goes away, if it does then learn to use this technique. The E should take the same amount of pressure as the back D. More tape: First take Seth’s adv...

Re: Uilleann Tunable Chanter?

From an engineering standpoint, the bulk of the housing lends itself to be unobtrusive on GHB, not so much with UP. It would look weird like this. Andreas' tuning slides are very easy and out-of-the-way, particularly for his regulators with the external knob behind the keys. Very smart setup.

Re: Uilleann pipe making lathe

Nothing wrong with getting a new one, especially if you can get into a DRO and other useful things that will help you hit the ground running. Getting an old one has the benefit of jumping in at a lower cost (my 1940s Atlas was free), but you have the drawbacks of dealing with its own quirks, such as...

I use a China special from Home Depot. Keep a keen edge and set your blade height real low.

Re: Where the heck do reed gouges lurk?

I dunno. I G00gled ´in-cannel gouges´ and got this :https://toolsforworkingwood.com/store/item/EE-SG500.99IN/Set_of_4__In-cannel_Straight_Gouges_by_Two_Cherries Alternatively just re-grind a ´normal´ gouge. Slowly so you don´t fubar the temper. :D Bob Still using a FUBAR'd gouge, as a bit of a remi...

Re: Reedmaking and tone.

It is a part of the system, or a link in the chain, so to speak. Much of the tone is in the chanter. The reed is simply an air pressure valve that delivers the impulse. I also think a part of that chain is the player, as fingers do provide some degree of control of how the tone is delivered to the l...

Re: Tenor Drone Reed

Cane drone reeds are a pain; I have better luck with brass bodied composites. If you're set on cane, get a hold of Ted Anderson. He's pretty knowledgeable with that kind of stuff, and might walk you through if you ask. Some initial thoughts on the screeching cat effect: 1. the bridle might be too ti...

Re: What's wrong with the fit of my pipes?

Do you have a teacher? They should help you, otherwise have a look at some videos and get an idea. The belt is pretty high, and should be buckled roughly around the belly button, or around where your elbow rests at your side.

Re: Brass Non-Marring Rolled Staple Tool

I don’t know what Benedict uses. My approach to reed making is different than his. This was my own response to getting into tight spaces and having more subtle control. I will likely change how I do staples entirely very soon.
