Re: Rhymes with Orange-O

Okay, I'll bite: Hobart = HOBB-ert Montague = MAWN-tag Iowa Park = CORN-field Well... HEE-bert MON-TAIG. (same emphasis on both syllables) i-o-WAY Park Iowa Park is indeed surrounded by fields but they’re mostly winter wheat. As for Nano’s towns, I’ve hung around MIN-ee-SO-tah-doan-cha-no to know w...

Re: Rhymes with Orange-O

Late to the party. My apologies. Not wishing to let the Brits have all the fun bashing foriegners for mangling their pronunciations (though the Brits do the bashing with a great deal more humor than the French), we Texans long ago planted our own linguistic land mines: Hobart Montague Iowa Park I’ll...

Re: I thought this amusing...

I was imagining Tor getting his aerobic exercise jogging around to the 30 desktops scattered around his office. Then I realized he probably meant virtual desktops. I just got a second monitor at work. Can’t find a damn thing; I keep looking in the wrong spot. I think I’ll tootle over to the wood sto...

Another possible cause of quote fog is the dufficulty of cutting and pasting on an iPad, or worse yet, an iPhone. You have no idea the trials and trauma I endured to quote Nano out of context using my iPhone. Truly though, tablet editing is a pain.

Re: More "divided by a common language" stuff

And there you go. Catchy word, though, isn't it. :) I was reading a discussion from Portland, Oregon where some people strenuously objected to the use of "spendy" in their fair city - apparently they found the word déclassé and a threat to the very foundations of Western Civilization. The...

Re: More "divided by a common language" stuff

Just a quick check on what may also be a regionalism: Do any Yanks outside of Minnesota use the word "spendy" at all? Late to the party. My apologies. I’ve heard it here in Wichita Falls, TX and use it myself on occasion. To be fair, the two gentlemen I heard it from are both Minnesotans ...

Re: Email scam

What's so strange is that some people actually fall for this. And some even if they've been burned once already. Some otherwise intelligent people insist that it can't possibly be a scam. People who lack certain mental capabilities or bodies of knowledge often lack the ability to realize that they ...

Re: Internet Pronunciation Guides...

“Burlesque.” Yep, that’s what it was. Thanks, Nano, for putting a name on it. The comeuppance for all this “all statements are equally valid” belief will occur when Mother Nature tests the statements in the fire of reality. We said cigarettes were good for us, lead made great water pipes because it ...

Re: Internet Pronunciation Guides...

In terms of social contribution, if one is not to be dysfunctional, one tempers one's attention-seeking, and while that's learned and not hard-wired, it is certainly a very important survival skill in itself. I see in the current political landscape a great deal of intemperate attention-seeking. I ...

That’s pretty much the internet in general. Sadly, far too many people will take as gospel anything that matches how they wish it to be.

Re: Can't read it wrong

Here is an article about stocking fish from airplanes. Some are killed but the survival rate is higher than backpacking the fish all day into the remote mountain lakes were aerial stocking is usually conducted.
