Re: Best Beginner's Flute

I think she's going for an ME delrin because of what she can afford. She placed a WTB for a Copley here but no takers so far. I'm hoping whatever she gets will be playable and have decent intonation. I also like the tuning slide because she has friends she wants to play with soon. If she gets hooked...

Re: Best Beginner's Flute

I had no idea this query would result in 5 pages. I hope this thread is useful to other people starting down the road of trad flute in making informed choices. Thanks again everyone for such a good discussion.

Re: Best Beginner's Flute

Thanks everyone for putting in your 2¢... I was enquiring on behalf of a flute student that needed an instrument appropriate for trad and, because I haven't been in the market for a starter flute for around 30 years, I thought this would help her make an informed decision. I have played a Ruddall &a...

Re: Michael Grinter Flute,

I bought one of Michael's early flutes in 2000, but I happened to own the same R&R Wylde that he used as his prototype... so I was already used to it. As many have said here, it requires a focused embouchure and not a lot of pressure. That's easier said than done of course, and it's counterintui...

Re: Flute Insurance

Thanks, Rob...so I guess that would be considered replacement value? I'm wondering are they selling for more than that second hand or not.

Flute Insurance

We have had a couple of instrument in my circle of friends and I'm thinking of insuring my flute, but I'm not sure what it's value is to the rest of the world right now. It's a fully keyed Grinter made in 2000. Does anyone have an idea?

Hammy Hamilton (flute player, flute maker, singer, etc.) is in town this week with Eoin O’Riabhaigh (piper). They are playing at the Plough in S.F. tomorrow (Tuesday), for the dancing on Thursday, and hosting the session on Sunday. In addition, they are each leading a workshop on Saturday during the...

I saw Peter's old flute back in 1996 at Teach Murray's pub in Gurteen and it was just a concert pitched 19th century flute. Those flutes can play pretty near Eb when pushed all the way in. It's possible he did this and Fred tuned up to him. He was playing fiddle mostly in those days it seemed. I ask...

Re: Jack Gilder "Garden of Butterflies" Jodies Hea

Anyone know what kinda flute he's playing? Thanks, J. Hi, sorry for getting to this so late. I do play a Grinter now, but I wasn't at the time I made that recording. It so happens that the flute I was playing was the exact model and maker that Grinter based his design on. It's a Ruddal & Rose m...

That was the very recording that inspired me to take up the concertina to begin with. You're a very lucky man to have been at that concert, Peter.

I thanked them all for participating in my class and I told them that together we have demonstrated a very important and interesting aspect about the concertina: no matter how many instruments are playing -- you can still hear the damned thing. Slight correction needed here, I think: No matter how ...

I offer a concertina workshop daily at the Lark in the Morning camp in Mendocino, CA. I used to get more students until Noel Hill started having his summer schools. Most people that play concertina save up their money and attend his classes every year. I still get 3 or 4 students at Lark Camp, and I...
