Re: Flute rests for players with hand problems

I would also be interested in learning about these exercises, too. I have a new student with arthritis in his left hand. He can't bend his left index finger enough to be able to use the base of the finger as a resting point, and he has been using his left pinkie to hold the flute, which is constrict...

Re: Price Check

Several used six-key GLP flutes in good shape with case have sold in the US in the 3K to 3.5k range recently. I don't think that is so far off from their cost new. They are nice flutes, and seem to hold value. Yes, I just bought a 6 Key GLP from Blayne for $3.5K. That included the nice wooden case....

Re: Now Trending...

It seems like the last ones we've learned are always the most popular, but we have two sets in particular that are trending right now: Maire Rua/Choice Wife and George White's Favorite/Holly Bush/Bird in the Bush I like the slip jig set, because I remember trying to learn it when I was first trying ...

Re: Josefin's Waltz in G

This is such a lovely tune, and I've never known the name of it, so thanks! How about this for a last line: B2 A2 G2 |F4 G2 | G6 | G2 F2 E2 | D4 G2 | F3 E F2 | G6- |[1 G2 :|[2 G6 |] (PS I've been a way for a long time, and it feels a little creepy to just jump back in like this, so I feel the need t...

Re: pvc vs delrin vs ebonite

Thank you all! I am looking for keys, so I think I am going to wait and go with wood. I was fine with an 8 key blackwood flute some years ago, and sold it (why, oh why??) so I will start shopping around.

pvc vs delrin vs ebonite

Hi, everyone -- I have been inactive for a long time, but lurking. After searching, I have not been able to find an answer to this question: Years ago, I had an M&E polymer flute. I don't know if it was delrin or PVC, or something else, but it was so heavy that I couldn't play it for more than 1...

I've gotten the "stick of dynamite" explaination also. Sometimes, depending on how the flute is positioned in my backpack, they can see the fingerholes in the x-ray, and then they don't have a problem, but if they can't see the fingerholes, they search. I've also learned to just take it ou...

One consideration is that a Tipple Bb is a monster, and you might want to check to see if your fingers would cover the holes. I have very large hands for a woman (I can't buy gloves that fit me), and thought that I might give a Tipple Bb a try. Doug warned me, and told me that the only way that **he...

Wow -- I'm glad that this resolved itself! If this happens to anyone in the future, and you absolutely can't get the rod out, there is a tool that is made especially for this purpose. I wouldn't propose that you go out and buy it, but rather head to a music store to have the tech take care of it. If...

When playing in an ensemble, any good player can and must markedly adjust each note to be "in tune". So however your instrument's scale has been tuned, much of intonation is the player's responsibility. (except for certain string instruments that aren't quickly tunable like piano). I play...

The last time I had a pad replaced, it cost about a dollar. This was to replace a single pad that had fallen out of an english horn, so you might allow a little more for taking the intact pads out of the flute, and also figuring out what sized pads to replace with.

Re: Slip Jig "set" Suggestions ?

I am looking for one or two tunes to add to "Kid on the Mountain" that would work together as a set. Any ideas? What order would you play them in? John If you're open to non. slip jig sets, then I've heard Kid followed by Morrison's jig and it is a nice smooth transition. I also like the ...

Re: Oboist looking for tin whistle recommendation

Hello everybody...new member here. I'm a professional symphony oboist ...I'm in the market for a whistle, but I'm thinking that a whistle with more resistance might be best for me since I'm used to the tremendous resistance/back pressure from the oboe reed. Welcome! I'm an oboist too (amateur, but ...

The leak could come from your not completely sealing one of the holes in the RH, as well. You've probably checked this out already, but it shouldn't be overlooked. Try a few different grips and right arm positions (e.g., raising your right elbow a little when you begin to play the flute) and see if ...
