1. For me as a Czech, it was very useful to learn English - in Czech language, there is emphasis to relations and opinions of speaker, in English, there is a emphasis to "reality independent of my opinions", mainly thanks to a fixed order of the words. So undoubtly, learning English helped...

Of course you should have a good rythm (try playing with metronome or some CD).

Do you have any tricks to play at "full speed"? I have found that after knowing about 30 tunes by heart, I did a "big leap" regarding speed, but I it seems that I need another one or two tricks...

1. Perhaps because if you know and like Appalachian or some other kinds of American country music, it is quite small step to Irish music. So American folk and country music did a lot of "promotion" for Irish music. 2. If you know a song on a fiddle, you know it on Irish banjo, also on a ma...

I am 100% Czech living in Czech republic, Europe. Czech = Slavic language, Central European culture (brassband music, but also very traditional bagpipe and clarinets. Some say some styles of Czech folk music survived since times of Celts here in Central Europe). But Czech Republic has a really inter...

This is my list after 9 months of memorizing tunes (I play Desi Seery flute and no-name whistle hand-made by Dingle piper, both playing well the second octave, so I do not have to figth with any technical obstacles): The first 10 tunes were difficult to memorize, now I just write down the first note...

I am an "advanced beginner", I know about 25 tunes by heart. After a hard work of learning the first 15 tunes, now I learn much faster, I learn just few "points" of tune, other tones go automaticaly. Interestingly, I just marked the first tone of every melody to my list of tune n...

I prefer runabc - it is a graphical user interface to text editor (I prefer Editplus) abc2ps, abc2midi, postcript viewer (Ghostscript) and midi file player (winamp with some plugins). Rather complex to install, but very flexible, with the best possible printed notation sheets. All available at: http...

Hi all, could you compare Olwell versus Desi Seery? I am preparing to buy Desi this week, should I switch to Olwell at this very last minute?) Is Olwell tuned not only to itself, but also to other instruments at the session? i.e. does it matter that it has no tuning possibilities? Is it's D a ...

Have you ever tried to write down the notation including all the ornaments? I have seen such notation several times, it was helpful to me, but as we know, it is not used by traditional musicians. I would like to see 3-4 variations of well-known tunes, perhaps with opinion "why in this way".

Hello everybody, just a month ago I have posted this text to a Celtic archaeology discussion group: Well, what about Bohemia? As every Czech child know, Bohemia (=Boiohaimum) means "land of Boii". Boii were a Celtic tribe, which developed from "protocelts", i.e. from old local po...
