Just be certain it's not pitched to 452. Not impossible at 440, but might be difficult to get it there and keep the entire scale in pitch. good luck! AndrewK once told me that you could tell if a flute is high pitch by some details, like the distance between the block that holds the D# key and the ...

I'd say, show it to a competent person ;) If you can't do that immediately, then glue the broken piece with green cyanolit (crazy glue), it is easy to remove with acetone if the flute deserves a more professionnal repair. And if it is not worth repairing, that simple fix will at least make it playab...

What I meant with Bordeaux is just that good wines in general have good corks ;) Careful with the generalizing... I have had a few Bordeaux where the best part was the cork! I fear its that the French are keeping the very best for themselves. ;) :) Sure... It works in one sense only: good wines hav...

Hi Matt, thanks for your precision. "Bordeaux grand cru" cork is sure excellent but what about the "Bourgogne", "Chianti" e tutti quanti! Fortunatly I got chopsticks home (for takeaway!). Just one thing: if I understand well, that mesure is just the standard ratio 1/1 ...

How does he make black keys? Are they lacquered, like black saxophones? Anodized? Sounds interesting :) Don't forget to post pictures when you get it.

Hi flappy. Normally the cork should be easy to remove... So that you can move it at the right place, and wrap it with cigarette paper (for example), if it's too loose, or sand it if it's too tight. I use Bordeaux corks, personnaly ;) A very useful tool to have is a chinese chopstick with a small mar...

- German: blackwood
- French: cocuswood (could be rosewood, if it's a really a low-end one, but seems unlikely.)

Too dark for Mopane, IMHO, and I've never heard that wood was used in the 19th century.

To make this even clearer, this is a Ganley flute. The worst ones I ever tried (and in 12 years of practice, I tried a lot of bad instruments).

Hope my post is not inappropriate. If it is, please remove it.

I especially like the french style keys with pointed arms on the footjoint. Does it have this very flat F# most french flutes have ?

Another exercice is to play the same musical phrase in the lower octave, and in the higher, well in tune, as strong as possible in the lower octave, and as soft as possible in the higher octave. This exercice is possible on a flut...

A lot of woods are marketed as "cocus" these days... Especially for indian or pakistani made flutes. The "real" cocus used for flutes during the 19th century is a very rare wood coming from the West Indies: Brya ebenus . It's dark reddish brown. According to the pictures, I don't...
