Re: Flat set makers (for mere mortals)
David Goldsworthy is I think only doing flat half sets so far. Ta. Crikey didn't realise this forum was still going.... yeah I'm still trying to arrive at a decent B/Bb chanter without straight copying the work of others. My current attempts play well enough but not good enough for my personal pref...

Re: Good Plane for Reducing Cane Slips
I have good results with a Veritas Miniature Low-Angle block plane which I use primarily to plane nice straight tails before shaping further if needed on the sanding cylinder: https://www.leevalley.com/en-us/shop/tools/hand-tools/miniature-tools/planes/70138-veritas-miniature-block-plane?item=05P8220

Re: Bass drone "puck" resonators
When I received my first set of drones from a prominent maker in Ireland back in 1990, the bass drone had a solid disc. Not knowing any better, I thought the maker had taken a cheeky short cut and didn't bother to make a 'resonator' proper. I didn't question him though as I couldn't be bothered hand...

Re: Something to look forward to
In the documentary Ann Mitchell Goldsworthy says "it's a Harrington set", Given my Anglo/Irish provenance from my father's side, Goldsworthy and St Aubyn/Lawler, imagine my excitement reading this having not yet seen the film, thinking perhaps she could be a relative, only to find that he...

Re: Cape Cod Cloth?
An acquaintance of mine purchased a full set of Patkos pipes and took it to a professional brass instrument maker who lacquered the whole thing. By 'the whole thing' I mean every single piece of brass. Very spic! Not sure how long it'll last though, but no doubt as long as it does on your typical la...

Re: Reedmaking and tone.
I've often wondered with all other things being equal, will an instrument like pipes sound differently to the listener and player. With your body being in contact with the instrument an your location to the source of the sound, would this change how you hear the tone RORY When a fellow piper came o...

Re: Reedmaking and tone.
Driftwood said: " Someone once told me that my particular chanter/reed combination at that time sounded "woody". I personally prefer a woody tone. After all, the chanter is made of wood so I want it to reflect the material it is made from. However, I think you can still make a distinc...

Re: Liam O'Flynn on the Renfrew ferry in 1990
I am surprised you find this remarkable, to me playing third d like that seems the obvious way. Probably just one of these things where the way you originally learn to do it becomes the obvious and anything else surprising to a degree. I learnt to play High D like that through 'Kitty's Rambles' (I ...

Re: Leo Rowsome's personal set
The first thing we both noticed was the chanter length was a full 14 and 1/4 inches long - Liams chanter was of course (is still) 14". Anyhow, we tried a number of his reeds in the longer chanter and it was always well flat of D. Talking with Liam about it was how I formed the view that Leo li...

Re: Thread for joints
I use machine sewing thread ( cotton and polyester) which comes in large spools ( cones) for use on Over locker machines. I don't know how many miles of thread there are on one of these but the sewing thread I prefer is .004" ( 0.1mm) diameter. This should be obtainable from any good sewing sh...

Re: Tenor Drone Reed
I've had better consistency with cane reeds since I started carefully opening the bore of undersized pieces using a hand-held egg-beater drill to my preferred bore size.

Re: Ebay Items
uliieann pipes parts. - pipes are in France, I have my suspicions they are Pakistani, but the bass drone piece looks different from the normal sets. David Looks very much Charles Roberts. The bass drone looks different because the No.1 piece (reed piece) has been connected to the No. 4 piece (tunin...

Re: Phase Locking of Drone Reeds in Hollow Mainstocks
Thanks Nate. I first noticed phase locking after I had modified various aspects of the innards of my solid stock. Cane reeds. But not to the degree of locking you show in the video. That's a very nice sounding set you have there..

Hi Nate,
are you using cane or composite reeds in the video?
