Re: OMG! A Casey Burns Shakuhachi!!!!

>> When I introduced these as a 2 piece Mopane instrument in about 2003, the retail price was $250. Casey, how funny that you should mention the year 2003 and mopane. The attraction of getting a flute of mopane was first put in my head when I read a novel called "The Fury And The Power" by...

Re: OMG! A Casey Burns Shakuhachi!!!!

Sadly, I am poor and do not live in a home with a workshop. As for the episode of "criminal mind", I would suggest more an episode of "macgyver". A budding flutemaker has to learn somewhere, somehow. This was my first time using a hacksaw on this type of wood. Could I have used a...

Re: OMG! A Casey Burns Shakuhachi!!!!

Ok, here are two new pics. I shortened the folk flute adapter to keep the flute in tune better. The blade is wider than before, but more "chiffy" sounding. Doug, I've modified the headjoint of the Tipple-Shak too. The top of the tube has been thinned out, so that it's more comfortable to p...

Re: OMG! A Casey Burns Shakuhachi!!!!

Hi Casey, hi Doug, Doug, ask and ye shall receive. Here are pics of the slicing off the cork. I've got tons of pics and will cull them for a post about how to do the project. I'm busy at the moment, but will post more later. Casey, I'll have measurements soon. http://taocurrents.files.wordpress.com/...

OMG! A Casey Burns Shakuhachi!!!!

A visitor to my website saw my article about the Tipple Shakuhachi Conversion and asked for a wood flute version. Unlike the Tipple PVC, mopane is VERY hard to shape. I didn't want to mess up, so I cut off the cork end, beveled the thick flute wall to a barely there 1mm. Then I designed a shakuhachi...

Re: Beware of cheap ebay flutes!

> warning people away from Pakistani ebay flutes? Here's my advice: if you already have one of these wood flutes, slice off the end and convert the flute to an end-blown shakuhachi style flute. Very easy to do with pvc couplers sold in the home improvement stores. I recently made an adapter for a Ke...

Re: Tipple PVC Transverse To Shakuhachi Conversion

The Tipple-Shakuhachi conversion article has been very popular, so I reprocessed some of the pics in the article (and added new ones) for greater clarity. Also, the link for the music clip has changed. BTW, I made a shak adapter for another flute in my collection: the Kerry Low D. The adapter is bas...

Shakuhachi adapter for Kerry Low D Whistle

There's been lots of interest in my Tipple-Shakuhachi conversion , so I made a shak adapter for another flute in my collection: the Kerry Low D. The purple headpiece twists off for safe keeping. The adapter was shaped from a 1-1/4 inch PVC pipe coupler (for 1 inch OD pvc pipe) that almost perfectly ...

3-piece Shakuhachi-style Low D whistle

Hi, I see C&F has many Asian members. Here's a 3-section low D transverse flute that I converted to a Shakuhachi - a fipple-less low D whistle. It's end-blown, yet as expressive as a flute. I'm not a good player, but it's my favorite flute. :D The base flute was an old-style Tipple pvc flute tha...

Re: Tipple PVC Transverse To Shakuhachi Conversion

Here's a short clip (160Kb) - a measure from Amazing Grace on the converted shak:

It's not the best quality, done quickly on my laptop's sound system.

Tipple PVC Transverse To Shakuhachi Conversion

In a recent move, my Tipple PVC flute's headjoint developed a crack over the cork. Doug doesn't make my model of flute anymore (it had copper tenons), so I converted the headjoint to a Shakuhachi. All the details for the project in the link below, as well as pics of the flute before and after conver...

Congratulations, I think you're right. On Skip Healy's site, he says that his fifes/piccolos "feature a parabolic bore in head joint which (at the body) opens up to a cylindrical bore to the foot." I didn't realize that a Boehm headjoint was useful for piccolos. I was told that cylindrical...

The construction is not typical of the “Irish” flute in that it has a Boehm taper in it’s head. The body is cylindrical and does not have the contours that are necessary on the outside to adapt to the internal taper of the common Irish flute. Is this true of all his flutes? His website does not say...
