Re: Alex Green Memorial Concert : Aberdeen Nov. 8th 2019
Sounds like a great night. I wish I could make it up from Glasgow. You never know. Alex’s playing is so unique. I noticed in the wee video he does something I’ve tried to do with that I’ve not really seen other players do. I’ve seen some players do the ‘swipe’ as I call it on C sharp. Essentially yo...

Re: Gluing the liner
Hi PB+J, I’ve used Gorilla glue when I’ve done it and it works well. Be aware it foams up a bit so less is more. Others use epoxy. Years ago before I did this myself Skip Healy used epoxy on a flute of mine. I think Shellac was what the old boys used so would work as well. I would poke around on Fac...

Re: Piccolo & flute
Fluters interested in band flutes would call High d through high f a piccolo C , B and Bb would be treble , melody, or band flutes F would be F flutes But I wouldn’t trust them they call the low Bb and the Eb a bass flute. Similarly Thomas Aebi calls his G flute (made to play with Basel d piccolos) ...

Re: Playing vintage flutes in tune
Besides using them in tunes that need them. If your low C is strong you can crann on that note or the C # though I can’t think of a context where the low C # would want to be. You can scoop up to D from low C# or break up Ds with C sharp low gracenote. Use as an alternate sound for the middle C/C# C...

Re: Playing vintage flutes in tune
I recently got my Monzani flute back after it had been on a long holiday.
Picked it up and thought wow that’s out of tune.
Now I’m back into playing it. It all falling into place.

Do the bag and bellows work?
Some do.
Buy the best chanter you can afford. If you’re on a budget try KM bagpipes printed chanter.

Re: Thoughts on Alexander Karavaev Nightingale Whistles?
Hi Richard, I recently came across these whistles in a shop in Inverness. I was with the kids so didn’t have time to play it extensively. The low E bore looked big and the windway large. I thought ‘this isn’t going to be to my liking’. But it played really well. The Eb I tried was slightly better bu...

Here’s a Monzani on eBay (similar to mine Jon)
that has this style of head and barrel but without the trill key.

Re: E-bay flute...
Hi Terry,
The barrel arrangement on the Monzani (I’ve seen it on a Rudall as well and other flutes)
is to accommodate the trill key maybe?

Re: Older Whistles
I have two Atlas celluloid conical jobs made in Paris. Both are unusual players and are in between C and C#. I love playing them as they play and sound like no other whistles. They are Clarke like but also totally different. They both have a curious buzz on the Bell note that can be a nice effect. I...
