Hairy psalms. lol.

I've played recorder a lot longer than I've played whistle (some 13 years vs. nearly 4). I know the jokes -- I just don't get them. Ah well...

I guess we all have our opinions, but I think the recorder and the whistle are cousins at the very least. They're similar in a LOT of ways.

And I proudly play both.

Nope, folks, I hate to disagree, but it's more than possible to play one and control that volume. I know how to do it. If you can come to where I am, I can put my whistle where my mouth is and prove it. --James I concur entirely James. We have two whistlers at our session, myself and another person...

Have you ever played a wind instrument before? If no, I would suggest sticking with something like the feadog (though I don't personally care for them), Generations, Oaks, etc. The Susato is really not a whistle for beginners, as others have already indicated.

I use my fingertips on the Bb, but I also have rather long fingers, so it's an easy reach for me. I don't find the high register on Susatos too loud, but I seem to be a rarity there. I tend to alter my embouchure slightly for the high register, tightening up or something along that line and it seems...

I don't think the VSB has an especially weak bell note, though it's not nearly as strong as the SB (on the SB I can give it a bit of a breath accent and not overblow).

The SB Bb is a lovely whistle. It's one of my favourites, even though I don't get to play it nearly enough!

That's an awesome idea! I wonder if our local place has any of those. Hmmm...

What kind of clarinet ya got there? That was my main instrument for many years. :-)

These whistles are in tune and I've never seen a point to buying them tunable--but others disagree, so there. I like them tuneable in case for some reason the group doesn't tune to concert pitch -- or if some of the instruments pitch changes as they warm up (which does happen). Otherwise, it doesn'...

More technical terming here. ;) You are referring to the overtone series. Not the harmonic scale. If one looked up the "harmonic scale," they'd be likely to come up with the "harmonic minor scale" which is a WHOLE different animal. And as peeplj said, they're still octaves. Only ...

I'm not really hearing any jig rhythm either, so I don't think you're having a bad day Bill (and knowing your playing, I'd doubt on a bad day you'd miss it either!). It sounds more like some sort of march to me.

As a fellow music theory teacher, I don't find they violate any sort of music theory "rules." Tonic is not derived from key signature. A key signature is nothing more than a tool to enable the composer to avoid writing the same sharps over and over again. It's not necessarily an indication...

It seems that all Erle Barlett's making now are the black diamonds :( The susato sounds very tempting... I've played the clarinet for 7 years now, and feel as though I would be able to handle the susato. Thanks for all of your input thus far :) does anyone have any more insight into the plastic tun...

Susatos in the right hands can sound amazing. I love those things, play them almost exclusively. But they take a bit of control in order to really make them sound as they should. No doubt you saw Kevin Crawford of Lunasa's clip on there? Amazing stuff. Proof the susato is a fantastic whistle. ~Crysa...

I'm not sure if I was horrified or horribly amused as I don't like the product anyway. But I remember seeing a commercial for some SUV a few years back that used this very dramatic music as the SUV was seen whipping over all these roads, showing its offroading skill or whatever. The music was from V...
