Re: was there ever any attempts to make a flute with valves?

valves work much better on brass than they would on other instruments, because brass is designed to easily play a full harmonic series starting on the second harmonic, unlike most other instruments (due to a variety of factors). Not as common as the Boeham flutes, but the tabor pipe, txistu, willow...

was there ever any attempts to make a flute with valves?

[Copied to the Flute Forum. - Mod] Reading up on the history of natural horns some included holes at certain points to bring the pitch in tune. For awhile it seems keyed Bugles were a thing. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyed_bugle On the other hand, reed instruments also seem to be primarily ke...

Re: Feild trumpet/bugle music outside of signals and calls.

The baroque trumpet's lenth is what would yield the most notes its length of tubing is around 8 feet compared to 4 of the trumpet. It would be fun to take 3 trumpets, de-solder the joints and make one horn with extra wraps... ...but that would be a lot of work for a Frankenstein novelty horn. https:...

Feild trumpet/bugle music outside of signals and calls.

I have been looking at feild trumpet tunes lately due to the scale that play is the same as the scale of an open willow flute. It seems that of the quicksteps I have found tend to only use five or so notes common to the bugle and field trumpet but don't really deviate from that into the upper range....

Re: Did I miss anything?

A decade later and my playing is still at grade school level. I tried to make things more simple and moved to the tabor pipe and then moved to the willow flute. Now I just play a long tube with a notch in it.

Washint: Ethiopian flute

Noticed a photo on the wall of an Ethiopian restaurant of an end blown 4 hole flute. This lead me to a video of player playing one. I have heard this tune played by two different players, so I assume it is traditional, but I have no idea what it is. Anyway, enjoy. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zYPjr...

Re: Looking for a fife

I have a Healy five with a cut out and a Firth and Pond style Peeler fife. I find the Peeler is easier to play in the 3rd register, but it is aslo the one I play more.

If you want to eventually play with other fifers, you'll probably want to check out what they play.

Re: Is best flutes when it is loved by nice flutists?

I have at least 2 beautiful flutes. I also own several fifes. When I want to play I reach for the tube that is me and is objectively not the best instrument of what I own. It is the fude that I paint bamboo with. When I reach for a knife I grab the wood handled garbage from the 80's and not the chef...

Re: New Peeler fife questions

I wonder if the Cooperman two-piece Bb fifes do better in the first octave? I think in this case a used Healy fife would be a great option. Amazingly powerful and controllable through 3 octaves with a Boehm like tapered piccolo like head. Resale is usually poor because it fills a relatively small m...

Re: New Peeler fife questions

This may be bad advice, but I find that changing my embouchure a better choice than rolling. The Peeler is a straight bore and will have tuning issues for the typical scale, but will be in tune with a corp of other fiffers, or sound great on it's own if you accept it for what it is. It is a fife and ...

The serinette was supposed to be a canary trainer. I think it was a predecessor of organ grinder.
