Re: “F” flute makers?

The Gallagher is based on an original F Pratten that Tom McElvogue used on his recording and loaned to me by it's owner, Norm Holmes, for a flute John made for me based on that design, but improved. We used boxwood I got from gaita makers I know in Spain and opted for keys that resemble the ones use...

Re: Patrick Olwell 6 key cocuswood

Good playing.....but it would be *insanely good*, even exceptional, if you brought it down by about 15bpm.

Re: Classical music on Irsh flute (with keys)?

Simply track down copies of the Charles Nicholson books with everything you'll need to become proficient in the use of keys. The workout from those books is simply unparalleled. Worth every moment.....and you get a new-found appreciation for what they were able to accomplish back then. Truly eye-ope...

Re: FS The Turoe Stone Collection Music Book $10

This is a sweet little book, Ben.
I just happened to have mine out the other day flipping through tunes.
If you listen to a recording of Vincent playing, you'll get a better sense of how these tunes should be played, which really helps.

Re: Rudall & Rose 1473 in G&H auction 17th June

This Rudall & Rose had been for sale at Hobgoblin for a time. No idea if it sold and is not being resold, or if it's the same owner as then.
fwiw
look carefully....there is not a bushing at the embouchure, although it appears as such. Very interesting banding that was done to it.

Re: Olwell 6 key cocus wood flute on E-bay

6years for a keyed blackwood. A keyed cocus flute....considerably more time, I'm sure. (not even sure he'd make a one-piece middle section cocus Pratten anymore) I waited nearly 10 years for mine.....8 years for my boxwood one. Levine is not wrong. I've seen the b-day flutes go for plenty.....and th...

Re: Chris Wilkes 4 key flute for sale

Chris did this exact thing on the foot joint of my keyed Bb flute of his manufacture. Looks very odd (unsightly?) but does the trick.

FS: 5key Olwell boxwood Nicholson SOLD

If you've seen the Olwell documentary that Jem Moore and Blayne Chastain produced, then you've seen this flute. It is a custom-made flute, not off the rack. The wood is Turkish boxwood with flame graining and infused with linseed oil by Pat using a very novel special technique to resist cracking. Th...

Copeland Catalogue

Not sure if anyone collects anything regarding Michael Copeland flutes. I have a very early catalogue of his in very nice condition. How early? An 8key flute was priced at $1500. (early 1984)
Let me know your interest if you do.

Re: Boosey & Co Pratten Perfected ( 1895 )

I have owned and played a number of original Pratten flutes, from the initial Hudson flutes to the Boosey variety (all made by John Hudson). Great flutes.....except for one thing: In my experience, the C# is woefully flat unless you use a couple of keys to vent it sharper and into tune. Again, my ex...

Re: My new McDonagh Bb fife may be the missing link...

McDonagh model fifes have been made with up to 11 finger holes (double hole on RH2). I have several that date to the 1950s when they were originally made by piccolo maker Roy Seaman, an old friend of John McDonagh (who was also a dear ole friend of mine). I knew both men. The Regimental Model was an...

Re: Rudall & Rose 3260 in auction, Marietta Georgia

FWIW I have since seen this Rudall & Rose flute in person and have played it, inspected it and given it the twice over. It is indeed an authentic Rudall & Rose in every respect.....save for the upper headpiece, which is likely a replacement from a cracked one. The crown aside ....the tube ap...

Re: Dayton Miller's Collecting Notebooks

Casey years ago when I visited the collection I had access (and now copies) of many of Miller's personal correspondence with a Denver man with whom he acquired a fair number of instruments worldwide. Fascinating reading on how Miller wheeled/dealed for flutes. The man, Francois Mignolet, was an amat...

$3900 with buyer's premium added in.
Not bad.
Finally, prices where they should be for flutes of this caliber!
