Re: Betcha can't say "Voldemort" ...

I do not pronounce the h in herb, nor do I recall it ever being done as a normal thing. I am speaking from the Mid-Atlantic. Nano has covered much of what I would otherwise contribute here. Most Yanks, even the relatively educated ones (my brother Jim excluded*,) tend to avoid pronunciations which r...

Re: Using "Would/Will be" in place of "Is"

(edit: I hadn't read the other responses before implying...looks like we're on the same page.) The "would be"/"will be" forms carry with them an understood extra phrase, such as "a noise such as the one we are now hearing is usually." Put another way, "That was a c...

Yeah, but...why do that? I think I have a very live and let live attitude here.

Whose premise is it that consciousness can't also split? I submit that it replicates, mitosis-like, with all copies remaining viable.

Re: A Modest Proposal

I cannot think of a time I have been in the presence of someone selfie-sticking. It is rumored to be ubiquitous, but I cannot attest to that. It is possible I appear in only the worst places, where no one else would actually like to go. As for selfies in general, I've been known to take them. Someti...

Re: Marrow Goodness

Nano, congratulations on using "unctuous" in a sentence, although based on the definitions I looked up, I have doubts that it was used properly. It means "resembling an uncle", right? I'm quite sure of that. :D avuncular? I'm not sure about any of this being on the Dean Ornish d...

Re: DNA of UK finally mapped

Yes, from an ethnographic point of view, it's completely arguably useless to know these things. The main thing it provided was a few minutes of fun, when (before testing) s.o. and I concocted awards categories such as "Cousin of the Swedish Chef," "Best at Dancing with Wolves," a...

Re: DNA of UK finally mapped

I've done it Nano-- The mitochondrial (National Geo Genographic project,) the Y chromosome (used my dad's a couple years before he died,) and most recently, the autosomal (Ancestrydna.com.) It's certainly interesting, and gives you plenty to geek out about. Don't be so sure about assuming that non-E...

Re: Crocs (Poll)

Due to the moldedness of their nature they are, of necessity, modeled on an average last. The average last is not shaped, in the least, like my feet. Most clog-like shoes of the sort favored by medical personnel are similarly boxy. As are Birkenstocks. So, while I do not dislike them, in theory, as ...

Re: Survey: Watches

I did give watches up around the time my increasingly large-screened phones offered to keep track of that for me. I like watches, but whenever I'd find one that I liked aesthetically, it would up and die after a year and a half or so. Then I'd buy an ugly one and not like it.
