Re: Rationalising the 19th century grip

Thanks Terry that's very interesting. I like the idea of the line-up dots too, I think I'd like them on my flute (maybe I'll try sticking something on!). It can be difficult to get to grips with descriptions of grips and I'm afraid I don't quite understand this: (particularly the bit about the nail ...

Re: New Web Site for Copley Flutes

Congrats on your new site, it's a massive improvement! - I did think it was odd to have to find your old site at the end of a page devoted to welsh lovespoons! - I bought a Delrin flute from Dave a year ago (and a friend has since bought one as a result), it's a great flute and I enjoy it a lot.

Re: Oiling polymer flutes

Like many I treat my delrin flute like a whistle (leave it assembled for easy access and give it the odd shake out). I was surprised at the notion of oiling a delrin flute, but maybe it's not as far fetched as I initially thought! I didn't know Dessi Seery recommended oiling his flutes, but that mak...

Oiling polymer flutes

Noticed someone mentioning this in Jem's new Piccolo topic-
my whistle & flute teacher (a very good player) oils his delrin flute and claims it smoothes the bore. I wouldn't have thought it would make much difference. Does anybody else do this?

I had the same problem (and it's available for restricted viewing only) perhaps this is available for free download from certain countries only?

Re: Canon Goodman - a must-read/see for traditional music lovers

Just caught the tail end of the TG4 show by chance, and found this post when googling Canon Goodman. The programme looked fascinating, never heard of him before but I'd like to know more now. The Irish Traditional Music Archive have published a book with over 500 tunes from the collection and it's a...

Re: Are "tenon-slide" flutes ever regularly used in sessions?

Note that many instruments used by classical musicians lack tuning slides - and simply tune by adjustment of the tenons. Clarinets, recorders, etc. Oboes adjust with the reed. With a pitch standard of 440 its pretty easy to narrow the focus. I used to play Clarinet and I've been wondering why flute...

I'm glad I found this thread! (I seem to find sticky threads almost invisible.) There are a lot of goodies on www.archive.org, and following the links above has been fun! I really enjoyed this set of reels from Leo Rowsome (pipes with fiddle & drum). I like the old style reprise of the first ree...

Nobody's mentioned Vinnie Kilduff (so I will). A great whistler and he's a piper too. I have an album of his that came out in the early nineties "The boys from the bluehill" which I listened to a lot at the time. It's got some lovely tunes including a couple of Charlie Lennon's jigs. (And ...

Sessions / Gig guide for Ireland

The following site may be useful for Irish based Gigs and Sessions. (I'm not sure how useful as I've only found it recently myself!) http://www.thejmi.com/events You can select options (location, etc.) from a drop down menu at the top of the page. Choose "Traditional Music Sessions" from t...

Also the book is online here:

It's a great resource but obviously it's not the quite the same as having a hard copy! I copied the chapters I was interested in and pasted them in Word for easier reading / printing.
All the best...

Sessions in Dublin (and Ireland in general)

This thread is a bit neglected so I thought I'd post two links to other sites that may be of some use: http://www.thesession.org/sessions/ I'd use the Search tab to help narrow the listings down to a session in your area. http://www.thejmi.com/events This page has listings of all kinds of music thro...
