Re: Top up breathing
No need to exhale existing lung air. Develop a focused embouchure. ( Put your lips together and breath out. This will lift the top lip off the lower. That's ALL the opening needed ) Don't "blow".... playing flute only needs the same air exhalation as when speaking, no blowing needed to sou...

Re: Provocation: Can you learn Flute in less than 5 years?
Yes But it would need 2 hours a day of focused practice, not noodling. Recording oneself, listening critically , refining Listening a LOT ( all the time to other good players ) Start with Tone/Embouchure/Embouchure/Embouchure/ Rhythm/Feel/Finger-work/Ornaments/Breathing/Supported breathing/Tune lear...

Testing foot joint pads on flute
Hi Has anyone made a device ( cork stopper and tube ) to blow air into a stopped foot joint ( in water ) to test for bubbles ? Need to be sure the C# and C are air tight B4 I try to make them sound ( they work individually, the challenge is getting both to close with the C lever alone , light touch ...

I have been enjoying this flute. I find it easy to fill, and better than my RudallCarte and Co. which I had f...

Cool Is it an actual Pratten, or a modern makers Pratten model ?
Glad you like it.

Re: Your Favourite Recorded Flute Tone
In the clips up the thread, June McCormack has a plastic tie-wrap around the D# key, keeping it sealed I guess. ( I think that's her Olwell )
She described that flute as "playing itself"

Re: How much for a Boosey Pratten and is it worth it?
[Thread revival. - Mod] I used to play a Rudall Carte for about 15 years. Grand flute. Great flute even. I recently ( Oct. '20 ) bought a Boosey Pratten Perfected from the 1890's. Ser. No. 14901 My experience is the Pratten is just as expressive/lyrical as the Rudall, and is more in tune. It's just...

Re: Cheap and dirty keypads
Terry I get a smooth face by placing the key upwards in a fitting tube. A mm below the end. I have a slot cut for the key lever. Pour the silicone in. Soapy fingers to smooth it over the edges of the tube.... And then lift it out of the tube. Clean the edges.... result is a raised profile of silicon...

Re: Boosey & Co Pratten Perfected ( 1895 )
Hi guys Thanks for the Pratten responses. Anyone interested in a show and tell specifically for Pratten Perfected Fanciers ? I find its easy to fill, and has unlocked my playing, but I find while I can play it at home in the quiet, its hard to feel completely in tune in a session. Anyone recognize t...

Re: Boosey & Co Pratten Perfected ( 1895 )
Thanks Andrew and all. It's too late. I went ahead and bought it. It's in Germany now on the way here. ( I had a couple of videos made of the seller playing it, and it will be grand for my purposes ) I agree the C# might be flat, but so it is on my RudallCarte also. Oh well if it gets here, in one p...

Re: Boosey & Co Pratten Perfected ( 1895 )
Thanks so much.
My target flute might need 19mm slide extension.
Any idea on the implications of that ?
The intonation is fine at 440
Thanks again.

Re: Boosey & Co Pratten Perfected ( 1895 )
Andro Thanks, I appreciate your reply. Yes I am familiar with the Flute History group. ( Jem Hammond and others have been great source of advice and knowledge ) "optimal...." what does that mean really, I don't need every note to be perfectly in tune. I have a RudallCarte from 1888 or so t...
