Carbony Low D review

This carbony low D review is super interesting. https://youtu.be/eBzrg0I_ikM They explain how their innovative design allows the holes to be really close together and it can be played with a fingertip grip instead of a pipers grip. Check it out! They are a bit spendy and sound more mellow and less c...

Re: Reversable tweak: Getting Feadog MkII to sound like a Mk

My feadog is 2 years old and it has the same sticker as the one you are calling 2.5 but it says on the order that it was F10. It wasnt my favorite before but the more I play different whistles the more I like the sound, though it does have a couple of unstable notes and I always have to be careful n...

MK D Breaking in

So I have had my new MK low D for a week now. I feel a little like I am holding a lead pipe! But it sounds mellow and smooth and oddly, I can put it side by side with my Dixon Low D and the holes look the same and in the same places but I always have trouble covering the holes on the Dixon but the M...

Re: Ornamentation

Thank you everyone for all of the great discussion! I find that alot of jigs and reels seem excessive in their ornamentation and it seems like they want to be really showy rather than following a natural rhythm. I always imagine that, as jigs and reels are dances, if the speed and ornamentation make...

Re: Anybody there with experience in Tony Dixon Alto-Whistle

I have a Dixon A and I like it. It doesn't seem *that much bigger than a high d but I do find it easier to play with the piper grip. The holes are just big enough that it is hard to cover them all the way using a regular finger tip/flute grip. Maybe that would help? I also found that the tone was ni...

Re: Ornamentation

Thanks oleorezinator--that youtube video was super helpful. I have watched other youtube videos about ornamentation and cuts and rolls that were less helpful.

Re: Ornamentation

"What ITM flute and whistle playing does have quite a bit of is the using of near-instantaneous flicks of the fingers to articulate between notes. These gracenotes are articulatory and rhythmic devices rather than ornamental ones. " Are you saying you wouldn't articulate with tonguing but ...

Re: Ornamentation

As is oft said on this board, YMMV. Ultimately, each individual player must determine what method of learning tunes works best for him or her.[/quote]

Ornamentation

Question: do you find it better to learn a song straight and then add ornamentation afterwards? Or do you think learning it slower and with ornamentation and then speeding it up is better? I have read that when in doubt less is more when it comes to ornamentation, but at a certain point it would see...

I actually said that to my husband yesterday! Yes I think it does sound like a recorder :-)

Re: Musical teleconferencing, other than instruction

I have seen cool videos where a chamber orchestra or other small group plays together but in their own home. There must be some kind of program that people use to have the sound a bit better than just playing into a webcam for a standard youtube recording but idk. You could record a familiar song so...

Accurate tempo

I found this fancy version of Cooley's Reel https://youtu.be/jXAdDWWe060 and it's SO FAST! Is this really the true expected tempo of Cooley's Reel? I have heard several versions of this reel and this is probably twice as fast!

How does one decide what the acceptable tempo should be?

Re: Captain Picard's Ressikan whistle

Also apparently the original composition in the episode is in D so probably is a D whistle.
Here is a site with many versions of the sheet music: https://happyhumans.com/inner-light-she ... eneration/

Re: Captain Picard's Ressikan whistle

I am a pretty geeky trekkie and this episode "Inner Light" is actually what inspired me to take up Irish whistle. I played the flute already but struggle with the arm and head position being really uncomfortable.
