Facebook help please?
An artist friend is artist in residence at Hitchin's impending Rhythms of the World festival. I've got her set up with a Facebook page, but I'd like to get her a FB username so she can use a shorter address for her page on business cards etc. In order to qualify for a page username she must have mor...

Re: I Think I Might Have a Ghost...
Meh... Welcome to the club, n00b. Our beloved cat passed away at the end of May... Ha! That is actually a total red herring. Lindsey and I have had ghost cats for about 8 years. Exactly the same symptoms as you describe. Our cottage is a couple of hundred years old, so plenty of time for generations...

Support a Great Charity (costs you nothing)
Hi all, My youngest daughter and her friends at uni have been making extraordinary efforts in support of a charity I have only recently heard of. The Harry Potter Alliance, as the name suggests, uses the fanbase of JK Rowling's character as a ready-made pool of charity activists. The bulk of support...

Re: New whistle: stepping up from Dixon Trad
Get a plain old wooden-fipple Clarke. Best whistle on the planet, don't let the reasonable price scare you away. Be authentic, and play a REAL tin whistle! :) Yes, there's a place for the Clarke original, too. But it just doesn't have the bite and clarity that many people prefer. Takes too much air...

Re: New whistle: stepping up from Dixon Trad
I'm really loving the Dixon Trad. With the Trad, my Freeman MellowDog and my Nickel Feadogs I have all the D whistles I'll ever need.
In fact, I'm gonna order Dixon Trads in all the other keys available. Such a nice whistle to play.

UK: Take action to repeal restrictive pub music regs
As many will be aware, the 2003 licensing act introduced stupid restrictions on the performance of live music in the UK. There are currently calls for these restrictions to be repealed. Please consider visiting the following pages on a UK government consultation site and adding your comments and vot...

Re: Favorite type of tune ITM Smackdown.
As I type this I haven't decided which way to vote... I don't play in full ITM sessions, I'm not good enough - but I do sometimes play in slow, beginner and informal tune/ballad sessions. In our regular shambolic song/tune session I think we have most fun with the hornpipes. They seem very accessibl...

Strewth, Al. That's a lot of work you've put in there.
Nice and clear. Good job.

Re: The Scottish Mandolin Tutor by Dagger Gordon
Sounds interesting, Dick.
I'd like to learn more Scottish music, so I may well give this a go.
Thanks for the tip.

Re: Name this tune?
Years ago I heard a mandolin version of Bill Hart's that, IIRC, started in D and then went up a 5th to A. Might have been Eddie Furey... Might have been someone else...
Anyway, whoever it was, I've played it that way ever since.

Re: "The thumb mash tweak" a how to guide.
Loosening the head with hot water can work on an Oak whistle - I did it on mine and it went ok. I don't recall it being particularly awkward, but that was a couple of years ago. Maybe they changed the glue.
Still don't like the whistle much though...

Yeh, David. South Luton is our local branch. Spitting distance from my village. I think St. Albans has one as well.
