Re: Flattening the second octave

We're talking about the bottom lip, right? That's the only lip that's "covering" the hole, if by "covering" you mean actually obscuring it. And if I move it forward so it's covering 1/4 of the hole, everything flattens (particularly the first octave) and it has a really breathy,...

Re: Is the cap of Aulos AF3 (Stanesby Jr.) traverso removable?

Thanks for your reply, Uke. It took me some time to figure out how to post images here when I wanted to do it the first time. You cannot upload directly here, but you can upload your picture to a free image hosting site and post here the link. To really appear as an image the link must point directl...

Did you end up with a cork position different from the default one ? (The factory position corresponds to 25 mm from the center of the embouchure hole.)
You can mesure it by making a mark on the dowel through the embouchure hole.

Re: Is the cap of Aulos AF3 (Stanesby Jr.) traverso removable?

Thank you, Uke, for sharing this information. I myself have e-mailed AULOS at the time, but have got no answer. A word of caution: while dislocating the cork from its position was relatively easy, the cap itself sat insanely tight, but there was no going back. I succeeded only by hitting really hard...

Re: Sympathetic Resonance?

Maybe Greenwood's problem is that he is thinking about individual sound pulses propagating in the bore rather than standing waves. (Is that what he calls "more mechanical point of view") Any such argumentation may only apply to the transitional stage when the standing wave is not yet settl...

Re: Any Tips for Slurring Into 3rd Register?

Ascending to the 3rd register E from the fundamental and the lower harmonic without changing the fingering nor disrupting the air stream, ONLY by means of the embouchure and pressure control, seems like a very appropriate exercice for what you are looking to achieve. That would decouple the embouchu...

Re: Choice of leather for a traverso key pad

Thanks, rykirk. Yes, there's the question of "squish", but I was more worried about the achievable flatness after fastening it with melted wax. In fact, at some point, I forgot why I chose 0.5 mm. Now I realize it is dictated by the flute's design. I doubt that the original pad was thicker...

Choice of leather for a traverso key pad

What type (and thickness) of leather would be recommended for the key pad of a traverso ? I have made the key expecting a thickness of around 0.5mm which, I can see now, is rather exceptionally thin. The only leather I can find in this thickness range is sheepskin leather. I see one on the internet,...

Re: Mollenhauer single key flute?

My Bernolin (415Hz Delusse with Palanca-style embouchure) is sharper opposite the lip than at the sides (where it's rounded off), but not a razor edge. It's clearly been shaped with care. It's also a much better instrument than the Aulos 440Hz Grenser I had before. Thank you for this information. D...

Re: Mollenhauer single key flute?

Thank you for sharing this information about the Mollenhauer traverso. Yours must be like the one that is currently available on earlymusicshop.com (Previously Owned Woodwind section). 440Hz, large embouchure hole and slightly offset 3rd and 6th finger holes ? If I were you I would keep it for a whi...

Re: Flute Hold Right Hand Pinky

Regarding the left hand thumb my copy says "since there are no thumb keys ... one may choose to hold the flute" with the thumb. So true, she doesn't recommend not gripping the flute with the left hand...but her advice on the right hand pinky is definitive and I don't see how one could hol...

Re: Flute Hold Right Hand Pinky

Ah, it sure sounds like you have arrived at a good place, rykirk. Well done! But your new development is interesting. You've now gone beyond our 19th century flutes back to an 18th century style baroque flute. We've been able to amass plenty of evidence for the 19th century English Three-point hold...

Re: Tips on getting into the third octave

I think, the role of the larynx should not be overlooked. There is a correlation between the lip aperture and the glottis aperture. Tightening the embouchure will not give reliable results if it is not followed by the glottis. I just typed "larynx and flute playing" in Google and stumbled ...

Re: Bore roughness and tone

Skap, you've mentioned your two otherwise-identical Rottenburghs, one in wood, one in poly. Is it possible with these to swap the heads over? Do the characteristics seem to follow the heads, or be shared between the two mixed flutes? One area we have to be very careful of is the sharpness of the em...

Re: Bore roughness and tone

And if it's not the vibrational properties of the material, it must be the smoothness of the bore, or where would this difference come from? Occam’s razor, eh? IME flute acoustics, including your specific example, are more of a Hickam’s dictum affair. Well, the nature itself seems to favor Occam's ...
