Re: four month old flute cracks
Thank you all for the advice and encouragement. I have been in touch with the maker and have done some additional tests. I don't think now the 'breathy' tone is due to the hairline crack in the barrel, just getting used to things i think in terms of embouchure, covering holes and not leaning on Eb k...

Re: four month old flute cracks
So I've just come into possession of a new flute less than a week ago. I've been slowly playing it in and over the course of the past 6 days have played it for c. 1 hr in total. I found the flute a little bit breathy from the beginning and assumed it was an issue of getting used to the embouchure. A...

That's a fantastic album by the way. Many, many hours I've spent listening to it.rykirk wrote: ↑Thu Apr 14, 2022 5:12 am https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7KNX3nennU

Re: Boxwood flutes
The French version of Solen Lesouef's website states that she no longer uses boxwood because of its instability: if that's the case, that would "solve" your problem  I had a boxwood flute which I resold recently. I really liked the weight but, although I didn't have major problems, I...

Re: Boxwood flutes
Would depend on the maker and how the boxwood was treated. Potential cons are: Light wood can show dirt more easily. Stains & repairs are likely to be more visible. Boxwood, depending on how the wood is sourced, aged and treated, can be prone to warpage toward a banana curve. This would probabl...

Boxwood flutes
So, at some point in the near future my name will pop up on a list somewhere and I'll need to choose what I want for a 6 keyed flute. One of those decisions will involve the wood. As it happens I have an 8 key antique cocus, 8 key blackwood, 6 key mopane (and I fully accept the argument that I don't...

If you on facebook take look at: ty touze box Owner is Nicolas Le Touze from France, and he makes great boxes. On his facebook page are lot of pictures of his flute cases. You have several categories of his boxes, made from solid or veneer wood. Marin I have two flute cases from Nicolas (and a jewe...

Re: Delrin Pratten
Yes it's unlikely demand for irish flutes is the problem, but it's very likely that global demand for clarinets is a problem, or as you say for decorative substitutes for ebony which is vanishing even though it wasn't widely used for irish flutes. If you do any woodworking you quickly encounter wor...

Re: Delrin Pratten
I struggle to imagine that it's the modern irish flute maker population single-handedly denuding the world of high quality, instrument grade wood. The same wood is used for furniture, bowls, knick-knacks and of course more 'mainstream' woodwinds. Obviously no one wants to be a part of the problem bu...

Re: Trad Looper
That sounds really cool vermichou. I'm not sure if I'm the only one but I have this strange inability to tap my foot to the rhythm of the music when I play - it's either play or tap my foot, never both, oddly. I've tried various metronome apps to play along with to strengthen my timing and keep me a...

Re: My new flute case
Hi Flotineer. A fellow fluter from Brittany had recently gotten a flute case from Nicolas and was a friend of his. He directed me to Nicolas le Touze after I commented how nice his case was. After speaking with him, Nicolas sent through a catalogue with the wood panels he had available and the white...

My new flute case
So, after very many years I've finally got a flute case which I think my Olwell flute deserves. It's georgeous and a perfect fit. Made by Nicolas le Touze of beautiful white ebony. I remember when I first bought this flute in the mid 90's, a case was a luxury I couldn't afford. I'm very glad now thi...

Re: Wooden Flute from Ireland
Hi Jan, You can try Francois Baubet who's in Galway. There are a few other makers in the Republic as well but I'm less familiar with them. However, you could also go to Steffen Gabriel who's based in Germany? He makes beautiful flutes. There are also several excellent breton flute makers(Stephane Mo...

Re: Sam Murray Chacate Flute?
My personal feeling is that it’s irresponsible for flute makers to sell instruments made of woods they haven’t fully vetted prior to putting them into production. Making flutes isn’t like pen making where you can just choose whatever pretty looking wood you like. That's perhaps slightly excessive. ...
