Re: Flute tone

One of the things that happens during the warming up period is that moisture from the breath condenses as droplets on the cool inside of the flute. The location and size of the condensation droplets make a lot of difference to the sound and will be different for different flutes. You can remove some...

Re: four month old flute cracks

I guess I did something wrong, but it's hard to know what and that's the worrisome part. I would not assume that you did anything wrong and from your description it looks like you were very careful. Neither would I assume that the maker did anything wrong. We are dealing with a natural material and...

Re: Delrin Pratten

Interesting, Dave. So probably all three effects are in play - slippery, flexible and high thermal coefficient. We don't stand a chance! [Panic attack subsides] I wonder if letting the blank cool (pop it in the freezer?), touching up the edge on the reamer and re-reaming it might help. We try to ke...

Re: Delrin Pratten

But here's an interesting observation. I have marks on my reamers that tell me: stop when you get to this mark. So I naturally stopped at that mark when reaming the Delrin. But later, I noticed the bore was a smidge smaller. Thinking about it, I can imagine two reasons: - the poly would rather slip...

Re: History of Delrin in flute making

Michael Cronnolly was making polymer flutes in 1999 or earlier. I've don't think the material was ever specified though it looked to me like possibly a high density polyethylene. Here's a post from C&F dated 29 August 2001 (of course the links in it don't work any more). Mark I am thinking of pu...

Re: Pulling key pins

If the pin is bent into a hook at one end I try a thumb nail first. If that doesn't work then I'll use pliers to twist the hook back and forth, hopefully loosening up any gummed up oil or gunk that's causing it to stick. If there is a little bit of pin sticking out at the opposite end to the hook I ...

US Postal Service

If you are thinking of shipping a flute in the US you can expect problems with the US Post Office. Priority Mail which normally takes 2 to 3 days has been taking anywhere from 5 days to 3 weeks. The tracking system is only giving occasional updates so you can go a week or so without knowing where th...

Re: Delrin/polymer flutes...

I might have posted this before, a company in England that makes composite substitutes for ebony and rosewood https://www.rocklite.co.uk/ Apparently made from wood fibers and some sort of resin matrix. That does look to be something worth evaluating as a flute material. Their website shows pre-made...

Re: Looking for Second Hand flutes Australia

I exchanged emails with the Australian Dept of Environment and Energy on this topic about a year ago. If you import a blackwood flute into Australia you will need an import permit if the wood is "post-convention" (after Jan 2017) but not for pre convention. The export permit obtained by th...

Re: Hawkes Siccama

I saw that earlier and got excited, but then I noticed the sounding length of 573 mm, which I thought would make it a high pitched instrument. I don't see the sounding length as a very useful measurement since you don't know what tuning slide extension the flute would be played at. More useful is t...

Re: Very tight corked joint

Hmmm, I’ve owned several Copley Delrin flutes (own one currently) and I’ve seen multiple others, but I’ve never seen one with corked joints. Not saying they don’t exist or even that mine is the norm, only Dave C. can speak to that. I can at least try to speak to that. Currently we use Delrin to Del...

Re: Flute Case

Pistol cases are the least expensive option. You can use a case made for a Boehm system flute but will need to modify the interior to fit. I really like the flute and whistle combo case sold by McNeela : https://mcneelamusic.com/flute-whistle-combo-hard-case/
