Re: Flute tuning

Rule of thumb in a session is to tune to instruments that have fixed tuning, like a concertina or button accordion. They can't change, but you as a flute can. That way the group will be in tune with itself. An instrument that has fixed tuning may or may not be in tune with an electronic tuner. Somet...

Re: Yahoo Groups Demise

I'm of the opinion that there is so much flute-making knowledge encapsulated in that group, that if Chiff could take it on, it would be a service to humanity. If the message archive is 64 MB that should not be a strain at all. I believe there were some associated files - plans and such - which might...

Yahoo Groups Demise

I don't know if anyone has noticed this -- it seems that Yahoo Groups have gone away, and there is a limited window where group content can be retrieved. Has anyone with admin privileges requested the full content of the Yahoo Flutemakers group? It will be a tragic loss of a priceless body of knowle...

Re: Flute Journey - New Gallagher Flute.

2 of the rings on the keyless Pratten have fallen off and disappeared into the sessionsphere because of shrinkage, but this happened very early on. I tend to almond oil them once a week, which seems to work well. Maybe should start humidifying this new instrument. Wild humidity swings here - dry in ...
Coping strategies: don't eat for at least 3 hours before bedtime, cut down on alcohol, carbonated beverages, acid and fatty food. Losing weight can help too. Elevate upper body during sleep. A glass of lemon water or sodium bicarbonate helps some.
Re: Flute playing and Gerd

Well Gromit asked. There is a strong correlation between GERD and obesity. But of course, he should seek advice from a medical professional.

Re: Flute Journey - New Gallagher Flute.

Got the Gallagher keyed Pratten, though not in the way I expected. It is also a very nice flute. If you remember, I had been playing one of his unkeyed Pratten flutes, which is pretty much a dead-on reproduction of the Boosey & Co R.S. Prattens Perfected No 8626. It is a heavy instrument, with a...

Re: Flute playing and Gerd

I would expect less instances of GERD to be related to having a strong diaphragm. Could it be possibly related to diet, weight or a hiatal hernia? From the article: "Overall, the prevalence of overweight and obesity was significantly higher among wind instrument players in comparison with other...

Re: Flute Journey - New Gallagher Flute.

Hey Tom. I did not realize who I was talking to. Congrats again. Waiting, yes... but discovering that the Gallagher Pratten headjoint fits and works well with a Gemeinhardt M3 silver body has open up a whole slew of chromatic possibilities (that is, ahem, Reavy tunes). Aesthetically it is a pretty s...

Re: Flute Journey - New Gallagher Flute.

I have the same flute on order from John and I hope one day it will arrive. Interestingly, I also came from a Firth, Pond & Co - the six key Grey Larsen Preferred - a wonderful flute and I regret giving it up. I'm sure they behave very differently. I currently play one of John's Pratten (unkeyed...
