Re: Where are your ‘car whistles’

The Chieftains thing - yeah, sorry, I just can't see them misspelled. But, now you've activated my OCP receptor, I've also removed the green from your text, and refer you to CCCP#17 . You're going to hate me ... I must re-read the whole of the CCCP again; I read it all when I first joined up...

Re: Where are your ‘car whistles’

https://tinyurl.com/yyxvhwxo [Tiny url substituted, and spelling of "Chieftains" corrected throughout. Sorry, OCD kicked in - Mod] My apologies on the incorrect spelling, thank you for sorting that out. I have just found the TinyUrl website and learnt how to shorten long links, so I will ...

Re: Where are your ‘car whistles’

You have sharp eyes to have spotted the whistle there Sedi! I would never have noticed it there myself. Just Googled 'Mel Gibson whistle' and up came a result in Google Books for The Chieftains Authorised Biography by John Glatt. Can't read all of it on there, just the page on which the search term ...

Re: Where are your ‘car whistles’

Wanderer - yes exactly like that! Except it would possibly be easier to get hold of a copy of Catcher in the Rye in one of the local charity shops than it would be to find a whistle for sale in the area :D whistlecollector - I stand corrected about being unable to fit fiddles in shoulder bags :D Jus...

Re: better inexpensive whistle that will go to intermediate

Like Elspeth, I learnt on a Clarke Sweetone D and have found it to be good and not too piercing. It's the whistle I keep in my shoulder bag when I'm out and about. I have since acquired other whistles, including a Clarke Special Edition 200 in D, which has the traditional wood block - that has a ver...

Re: Where are your ‘car whistles’

I haven't got any 'car whistles' as such, mainly because I don't have a car :D However, I rarely go out anywhere without a whistle; I've usually always got my Clarke Sweetone D (my first whistle that I ever had) in my shoulder bag or laptop bag. I feel under-dressed if I have to leave the house with...

Re: Thoughts on purchasing a Bb whistle

Thanks, everyone, for taking the time to reply and for all your feedback. It's been really interesting to hear what everyone has to say  I think it is now safely narrowed down to either a Generation or a Dixon. The Freeman Generation do have a nice sound, from what I've heard on clips anyw...

Thoughts on purchasing a Bb whistle

Hi all, I have been playing my Clarke Sweetone D whistle for a few months now and am steadily improving my playing. I keep being drawn towards the sound of Bb whistles however - I realise now that whistles prove to be quite addictive! :D What I can't yet decide is which Bb whistle to choose :-? I ha...

Re: New to the world of the tin whistle

Thanks for the advice everyone and for all the fascinating info :) I have learnt so much from you all already; I'm so glad I found this forum. I haven't had chance to visit here lately as it's been rather busy at work, but I have still managed to get in some whistle practice! :D I am now using cuts ...

Re: New to the world of the tin whistle

Thank you brewerpaul and DaveAuty for your advice. I used tab to get me started, but I am using the sheet music a lot more now - helping to learn 2 new skills at the same time! The practically silent playing is brilliant, because I can play a tune over and over again to commit it to memory, without ...

Re: New to the world of the tin whistle

Thanks PB+J and fatmac for your replies. Last night, I tried a tip from the link that StevieJ provided about quieting whistles: A variation on the above: "Holding the whistle as you normally would, rest the mouthpiece just under your lower lip, blowing into the "exit ramp". This keeps...

Re: New to the world of the tin whistle

Thanks for the welcome and the advice guys! :) I think I will certainly try the blue tack trick, thank you StevieJ. I can't practice on the way to and fro work, as I car share, but summer in the woods sounds like a good idea. At least I can only upset the wild birds there! I have only tried to...
