They are mainly helpful when you try to play non-folk music on a whistle (hymns, etc. in my case).

Re: Cross fingerings for G# and Bb across different D whistl

I always half-hole both of those notes on the whistle. That's definitely fine... Though I am finding the cross fingerings easier to do at speed. Half holing at speed is really a challenge. As far as speed goes, the cross fingerings feel just a bit different from a C nat, and you can put your finger...

Re: Cross fingerings for G# and Bb across different D whistl

From my experience those fingerings only work on whistles with a thick wall -- like the Dixon you mentioned, or similar plastic whistles, like Susatos. It also works on the Dixon DX204 and on alloy whistles with equally thick walls, like a Chieftain or Shearwater and probably on other alloy whistle...

Cross fingerings for G# and Bb across different D whistles?

A while ago I stumbled upon cross fingerings for G# and Bb on a D whistle. G#: XXOXXX Bb: XOXXXO These work really well on my one D whistle (Tony Dixon DX005 polymer whistle with brass slide). However, these pretty much do not work on most of my other whistles (Generations and Tony Dixon Trads in br...

FS: Susato Taboriole Tabor Pipe in G with Tabor Drum + Book

I tried out Tabor Pipe for a few months and am finding myself settling more into penny whistle. I only have time to focus on a few instruments. For sale is a briefly-used Susato Taboriole Tabor Pipe in g'. A 9" tabor drum is provided with a single beater. The snare has been removed and is not i...

Re: Brass whistles making fingers smell

The Dixon Trad comes in nickel but it's a bit harder to find in the various keys. Dixon directly only seems to stock brass. Some other dealers have some nickel in stock, but it doesn't seem like Dixon is necessarily making those a lot. I don't have a dealer locally so I had no idea about the brass o...

Re: Brass whistles making fingers smell

I'm glad to know this isn't only me. So I guess my options are threefold: 1) Sell my Tony Dixon Trad brass whistles and instead get aluminum, nickel, plastic, etc. I have a brass-coated-with-nickel Oak that gives me no odor issues. Same with the couple silver-colored Generations I have. 2) Just deal...

Brass whistles making fingers smell

I've got a set of Tony Dixon Trad whistles in brass in a few keys. These whistles are awesome; I even like the tarnishing that happens where my fingers rest because it makes them look more antique. However, they leave an odor on my fingers - like I was digging through a piggie bank sorting through o...

Re: What whistles in order to play in any key?

You're 100% right about lower whistles being better for hitting the low notes of a song. Probably few if any hymns go above the range of an (mezzo) A whistle, but loads of them will go below a bottom-of-the-staff D. So an A whistle is my default choice for songs in the key of D or A. ... Great tips...

Re: What whistles in order to play in any key?

Let's say you wanted to play anything in a hymnal, for example, with minimal half-holing (only for some accidentals). I'm sort of a Hymnal guy, I own a pile of Hymnals from a large number of denominations due to researching Hymn tunes several years ago. ... That is a lot of great information! Thank...

What whistles in order to play in any key?

Let's say you wanted to play anything in a hymnal, for example, with minimal half-holing (only for some accidentals). What whistles would you prefer to own?

So far it seems to me that G, C, D, and Bb would cover a lot of bases. What else would you think would be needed? Eb?

Re: Anyone have experience with Tabor pipe? Question about k

Thank you for your kind response. I've perused the results previously, but still felt somewhat unsure on keys and sheet music and what it means for tabor pipes. I know a lot of people mainly learn and know things by ear, but I tend to like sheet music to first memorize a song alongside hearing it. I...

Anyone have experience with Tabor pipe? Question about keys.

I play tin whistle and am interested in trying out the Tabor pipe, basically a tin whistle with only three bottom holes. I love that this frees up a hand for a drum! I ordered a Susato Taboriole in G because I think a D will be way too loud and shrill to practice around my family. (Playable notes st...
