Modern whistle genre recordings
Hi all, I've come across some new work that showcases some great modern compositions and fantastic technique. If you're looking to hear what a whistle can be made to do in the right hands, check out Project Smok: https://open.spotify.com/album/3ND9uHNkofcBV7RHmhClDR https://open.spotify.com/playlist...

Re: The most dramatic low d whistle sound
The descriptions of the tone of musical instruments are linguistically as fascinating as generally questionable: it would be necessary to have the formantics curve of the tone of each musical instrument in order to attribute to each formant a precise qualifying adjective, and to the curve a qualifi...

Re: Reasonable whistles with back pressure
I'll say the transition from wind instruments like saxophone makes it harder to deal with whistles that are very easy to be overblown. I find Generations like this, as well as my Killarney. It's like balancing on a blade. Whereas whistles with higher backpressure allow you to push into notes more wi...

Re: Kerry Optima Alto F
I'm really impressed with it! I have had five of Phil's different whistles and the Optima is amazing in terms of playability and tone. It's definitely more of a free blower so be prepared with some lung volume for this and the low D Optima but it is a phenomenal instrument and holds its own again wh...

Re: Current shipping times
My whistles from MK took about 4-5 weeks but that was mostly on the USPS side. Whistles from Phil Hardy took about 2-3 weeks. It seems it takes an indeterminate time in US customs and about a week in UK customs. USPS may take their sweet time or go fast.

Re: The most dramatic low d whistle sound
I have a Kerry Custom Pro low D that has lots of back pressure and a very soft 'airy' sound. Also an Overton low D that has a more clear, loud tone with a beautiful buzz on the edge. Both can be haunting, so maybe it's whether you want a breathy tone or a clear tone.

There are the square recorders: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5EpAGnhvqI (I know nothing about Game of Thrones or what I assume is its theme song, but this was a good video showcasing all square recorders.) Those are some crazy instruments! The flat panel "keys" threw me off until I re...

Re: low d recommendation with criteria
Second on fast playing on a low whistle. Granted it's a low Eb, and it's Brian Finnegan, but you can blaze with the right technique.

Re: New Whistle: Kerry Whistles Busker D
I've got a Thunderbird high C that has loads of volume and you have to absolutely blast it to get the high b and c. In contrast my Bb Thunderbird is softer and airy with well balanced octaves. I love them both. On clogging, I noticed that Phil's aluminum heads have a taller and narrower windway than...

Re: Crossing Noise
Richard, this is an amazing bit of instruction, thank you! Crossing noises are a huge challenge for pipers, and you can get away with much more with whistles. In fact I've been so cautious on whistle that it's taken a while to find shortcuts where I can keep a finger or fingers down to switch notes ...

Re: Technique - Ornamentation vs. Tonguing
They are triplets, but triplets don't have to be three identical notes. Also, these triplets look like just one interpretation/setting to me where many would just notate a crotchet/quarter note and likely play a roll. That makes sense. I am aware triplets can be any series of notes but it's the rep...
