Re: Flutomat Help for E3 Hijaz Flute

I'm not a flute maker, but I have a lot of flutes. Isn't 3/4" bore going to be an incredibly narrow bore for that low of a flute? Even if doesn't immediately overblow past the first octave, it seems like the finger holes would be really far apart. Just as an example, I have an E4 flute from thi...

Re: Regarding Mailing a Flute from England to the US

Well, a lot of factors can be at play, but I was quoted a shipping price of 33GBP a couple of months ago for an order of a composite flute and extra headjoint that totaled about 750GBP. I ended up going a different route but that seemed reasonable. Seems like you'd have to have a lot of insurance in...

Re: New features available for the WARBL whistle/pipes USB MIDI

Hi, I'm very curious and thinking about buying a Warbl. As I am writing from Germany and not sure if I understood every information about the Warbl correctly, can you please help me with the following questions: With the Warbl it's possible to play vibratos and slide/bending of notes? It's possible...

Re: Nashville tuning applied to ITM

Haven't tried DADGAD but I have tried a few reentrant tunings for guitalele similar to Nashville guitar tuning. I like the different voicings and picking patterns this produces compared to standard tuning. I don't think this would work as well for DADGAD. Standard pitches would be D2 A2 D3 G3 A3 D4 ...

Re: Bansuri Flute Question?

I don't play bansuri but my understanding is they are essentially diatonic and have a range over two octaves. I do play NAF and despite the limited range, a good NAF is almost fully chromatic over its limited range. I play lots of jazz, pop, rock on NAF. I don't know what you mean by "western s...

Re: Narrow bore? Why?

For a softer high end and generally mellower tone overall - at the expense of a less bold low end

Re: Keys for Native American Flute playing

Buy a good flute and it is almost chromatic over a range of an octave plus a minor third. Most people don't play it that way, but if you do, there is a great range of music available to you. My channel delves into this in pretty good detail (among other things) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnzRf...

Re: Want To Buy Low (Alto, Mezzo) G; recommendations?

This explains my thinking for the narrow bore easier than I can explain here

It is not tuneable as I've had no problem with them like that and it saved money. But he does make them tuneable if that's your preference.

Re: Want To Buy Low (Alto, Mezzo) G; recommendations?

I like my Shearwater. I asked for the narrow bore version which is the same bore as the A. The standard G is a little wider. I had a Chris Wall polymer G and it was "ok" so I sold it on. I liked the A a lot better and kept it. I also had a Sweetbrass D that many folks rave about and it was...

Ooh, you have my attention! Looking forward to more info. Can you talk about such things as ergonomics - like how does the kaval compare to xiao in that regard? The fingering looks "interesting": https://zhivkovasilev.com/news/fingering-chart-bulgarian-kaval-in-d-by-zhivko-vasilev/ Somewha...

Shearwater makes an alto A with a low G hole. That's about the limit of a comfortable pinky reach for me.

Re: US Flute Makers

I know nothing about flutes, but what makes you think Ellis isn't taking orders? The home page has a Custom Orders button and the bottom of that page says "So to place a custom order, simply e-mail me to discuss the details." I just got on the list for a redwood xiao that wasn't in stock, ...
