Are you aware of the (right hand) stretch needed for tenor recorders? Sarah Jeffery (Team Recorder) is a pro with big, well-trained hands, for her it's not a problem. For many other people - me included - it is. I personally prefer the Aulos 2__ (Robin) tenor, which is shorter overall, allowing the ...

Re: Looking for a keyed tenor recorder
... Anyway, I found the Yamaha tenor unconfortable to finger, not so much the hole spacing as the right wrist angle. ... Straight tenors are uncomfortable for me as well, which is why I had my Aulos Robin transformed into a bent-neck ("knick") recorder. Kunath Instrumentebau in Germany (a...

Re: What's the current state of the slowdowning art?
Probably not state of the art as my computers are old, but they still work: Play it slowly on Ubuntu (Linux) and Music Speed Changer on Android. Both free and simple to use.

Re: Received my Freeman Mellow Dog - I have a question.
Two days ago I received my Mellow Dog C/D set and I have to say that I'm really impressed! Especially with the D version (which seems to be better in tune than the C tonebody, at least the tuner says so) - I love the powerful low notes and the ease of playing in the upper octave. It's so much easier...

Re: Best Inexpensive wood soprano Recorder?
I don't think the material matters as much for the soprano as for the bass - I hear more of a difference between my Küng Superio and the Yamaha plastic basses than between the Kunath Flautina wood soprano and the plastic ones from Aulos and Yamaha. That said, Kunath Instrumentebau makes good wooden ...

Re: Grey Larsen Books - wich one
As far as I remember there's some material you can download from the website. And I hope you have checked that you like Grey Larsen's way of explaining and describing things? I do, but I've read reviews from players who don't.

Thanks a lot! I'm always happy to hear comparisons that include "cheap" whistles.

Re: Optimal Packaging for Recorders for Shipping for Repair
I'd suggest to wrap the tenor in a towel or so, then in plenty of bubble wrap (or paper, or more towels), put it in the hardest cardboard box you can find, together with the soprano in its case, and then stuff all the empty space in the box with crushed newspaper, more bubble wrap, old rags, styrofo...

Re: transposing soprano to alto fingerings
I think the misunderstanding comes from the way the question was worded: "how do I go about transposing the soprano part to alto". The way I understand it there's no transposition involved. The music is supposed to sound more or less as written and Jeff is playing the alto as it's supposed...

Okay, now I understand. Thanks for clarifying. And that sounds like a seriously good offer, I'm tempted.

Re: at loss with my new Bb
I agree with benhall.1 - find a more experienced player to test it, if at all possible. I don't have any Bb whistle, only high Ds. Und in my array of cheap whistles (Feadog, Generation, Clarke, Dixon Trad) and the not-so-cheap Killarney, the Sweetone is by far the easiest to play. So I consider it n...

Re: Received my Freeman Mellow Dog - I have a question.
I was/am surprised that the difference between the metals is so big that it warrants a different model name. I prefer brass myself, because I feel it sounds "softer", but I always thought that a good part of that was my imagination, or because my very first whistle was a brass one...

Re: Received my Freeman Mellow Dog - I have a question.
... a C Blackbird and a C Mellow Dog are the same whistle except the Blackbird has a nickel-plated tonebody and the Mellow Dog has a brass one). Was that really what you meant or should there be a D somewhere? If they've played recorder, I hand them a Blackbird. ... You might refine the question by...

Re: Freeman Blackbird versus Cillian O'Briain
.... I first heard Cillian O'Briain play (the pipes) in 1980, his making and the vision it comes from is based in his expert musicianship, something he shares he shares with for example the Buckleys who make the Killarney, John Sindt or Colin Goldie. It may not matter to everybody, it matters to me...
