Re: Less Chiffy, Solid Second Octave

I have two inexpensive D whistles (Clarke Celtic & Walton D). Looking at the Dixon Trad, TJ Potter, or the Freeman Blackbird. Looking for a sweet second octave and perhaps a bit less breathy than the Clarke. And, I just want another whistle or two. Note that I'm fairly new at this, only having ...

Re: Difference in Whistles.

I'm still too new at this to want to share my reviews of individual whistles, since my own opinion of each changes as my skills advance. But I nonetheless want to concur with the above post: My Walton's Little Black D in Aluminum is the only whistle I regret purchasing, as for me, too, the second oc...

Re: Best bang for your... Air?

While it's true that most soprano whistles require relatively little air, for some that changes significantly once you get to A and above in the 2nd octave. I agree that the Killarney is a great choice--it plays easily throughout its range, though a new one is a bit over your budget. The lowest air ...

Re: High whistles: tapered vs. cylindrical bores

Glad to know about these additional makers of tapered bore whistles. Would love to give them a try.

Re: Killarney C

Now that they've been available for a few months, I'm wondering if anyone has any additional feedback on these Killarney Cs? While the initial reviews clearly didn't show a consensus, Mr. Gumby's concerns tempered by enthusiasm. Anyone else care to share their impressions?

High whistles: tapered vs. cylindrical bores

I'm trying to get a better understanding of the relative merits of tapered (aka conical) vs. cylindrical whistles. From searching, I understand that a tapered bore can allow closer hole spacing, but I'm only playing soprano/alto whistles at this point, so finger stretch isn't an issue. I've read all...

Re: Green top Generation change?

I came across several new green top Generation whistles with a very narrow (roof to floor) windway. Has Generation changed their mold again? Interesting. I've been thinking about picking up one of those Generation "Folk Whistles" simply because I prefer green to the red fipples that comes...

Re: Killarney C

I got mine two weeks ago, and I love it - even more than the D and Eb ones! Tube diameter is the same as a Generation or Feadog C. Can't wait until they make them in Bb too... Which did you get, brass or chrome? And if you got the case, is it larger than the D case? I can fit a Generation C in my K...

Re: Killarney C

For those ordering early, are you getting the brass or chrome plated version? I have a brass D Killarney, and it's among my favorites, but thinking about the chrome for the sake of variety. Unfortunately, I can't justify getting both.

Re: Where to go after the basics?

Which tutorial book did you use? I'm new to the whistle myself (though I play other instruments) and have picked up quite a few books to compare. But being able to learn new tunes by ear is a really important skill, so it's good that you're developing that. Reading from notation is certainly challen...

Re: C Natural Blues

00XX000 You mean OXXOOO? (You've got seven holes there.) Whoops--corrected my post, but yes, that's what I meant. And thanks for the detailed description. I'm not yet up to working on ornamentation, but I can see how a thumb hole would be problematic in that regard, and hadn't considered that it mi...

C Natural Blues

I'm only a couple of weeks into my whistle adventure, but having a great time learning and exploring. I've already purchased more whistles than I care to disclose and it's been interesting comparing them. I've got a lot to learn about breath control before I can adequately compare them, but the most...
