Re: Dixon keyless flute (& piccolo)

Thanks for your comment, Steve. It probably boils down to embouchure, which I will have to figure out anyway. I have the three piece Dixon flute. I'm assuming it's just me, but I simply can't get any sound out of it. Playing just the head joint, I can eventually find a spot that makes a ...

Kerry Optima at £49.00 is in that price range. Rather low air requirement, looks and sounds nice. His tuneable one goes for£99.00

Re: Newbie question volume on high register on High D whistl

I have the same problem. I'm told it gets better with practice. I just can't blow loud enough to get the higher notes in the upper register. I have a Low D on order. More lung power, but at least the dog won't hate me. If you want volume as well as tone, you might have to resort to a flute style whe...

Re: Super newbie question

I can compare myself to YouTube videos to see if I'm even close. I can tell the difference between the low octave and the next one up just by running up the scale. My wind gives out hitting the higher notes in the second octave. Practice seems to be the answer.

Re: Super newbie question

Adding a bit of "tongueing" to get the high notes started helps. Instead of just huffing air into the whistle, use your tongue as if you were saying the letter T or D.Try this with your hand close in front of your mouth (no whistle) and you'll see what I mean. This gives a little added bu...

Super newbie question

What's trick to getting high 2nd octave tones out of a whistle. I have a Clarke D, and now a Freeman Mellow Dog in D, and I can get the lower half of the 2nd octave, but it fizzles out around the high B or A. Even the next note down requires some really hard blowing, and the resulting tone sends my ...

Re: Clunky G string

Most hollow body instruments have a natural resonance tone. If it happens to land square on a fretted note, that note will suffer. I had to sell a really pretty guitar that had that problem. The only real fix was to have the body altered in some way, usually by changing the soundhole. It wasn't some...

Re: Shruti Box?

I have a Radel shruti box that I bought last time I was in India. It's similar to this: https://www.amazon.com/Electronic-Tanpura-Saarang-Ranjani-Instruction/dp/B007JU29L2 Amazon has them for $125 - in India it was about $40USD Essentially, it's a battery, or AC mini amp with speakers, that has sev...

Re: Putting a finish on a whistle.

That was going to be my next question. I would think sealing the inside would be more important than how the outside looks. As a pen turner, CA works great to give things a hard, plastic-like finish. I prefer the natural wood look, so for me I'd use a friction polish on the outside. So, what about t...

I've used that excuse many times to buy nicer instruments. Trouble is, I still play badly. But at least I know who to blame.

Re: Cocktails

This could be made at home, but it's definitely a bar drink from its inception, and a Nano Original (in that despite it being dirt-basic, no one seems to have ever encountered or heard of it before me): Basically it's just whiskey, seven (lemon-lime), and bitters. This mix has the curious attribute...

I learned this real fast. I started out small, making pens. Within a week of turning a few rosewood, purpleheart, and other pens, I developed a cough that lasted me for a good six months! Now, I don't go anywhere near the lathe without proper protection.
