Re: Danny Boy

so it sounds like "avoid in trad sessions but otherwise do what you want" is the advice, and the cause is a mixture of it being the "free bird of irish music" and the song not being authentically irish despite being arguably the song most widely associated with ireland for people...

So I set for myself a list of easily recognizable tunes that I wanted to learn before a given date. Among this is Londonberry Air. I was listening to the Clancey Brothers which I really enjoyed, and couldn't find a recording of them doing it. Then I tried to find some done by other famous Irish sing...

Re: great songbooks of irish airs and jigs

picking through some of the airs i've found online and in books, it's amazing how many have been used as the basis for hymns. i recognize a lot of them.

erik the flutemaker's wooden whistles

In his videos they sound really good and mellow. I'm wondering what your thoughts are. Do they require any special maintenance? Good value?

Re: great songbooks of irish airs and jigs

Ben, Interestingly enough, I've always thought of 1850 as "the book", and 1001 gems as the sequel. I had all three including the Miles Krassen book at one time. My favorite was 1001 gems, but I loaned it out and never got it back. 1850 is just as good, and I agree with you about the Miles...

great songbooks of irish airs and jigs

first off let me say I recognize this is potentially a tall order and I know little enough about the culture and history of irish traditional music aside from I like the sound i know that there are a lot of people who recommend only learning by ear, and while i appreciate that method i like having t...

Re: Riley's School of Irish Music

Saturday was the first day of the winter semester and I have to say I was really impressed. Everyone was very nice and laid back. I guess its because everyone was there for the same reasons: to learn and participate in the tradition. I learned a lot in class, and learned almost as much talking with ...

Re: ITM in Mexico?

I wish you the best of luck in finding folks. Here in the US while clearly not as concentrated for this kind of music as some places in europe, at least have the advantage of significant historical irish and scottish migrations But I bet it's a lot easier to find someone to teach flamenca guitar in ...

what would be some good examples of breath control exercises? i find breath control to be a problem for me. especially on the lower end of the scale. I can't really speak to breath control exercises but I've been trying to work on my cardio and started x-country skiing since my house backs up again...
