Re: Conical bore D, and a Low F?
I've got a Clarke Meg, and an Original. Did the squish on the Original too. A squished Original sounds close to what I wanted in a high D whistle, a bit softer and breathy like a flute, not as piercing. I've got a Freeman Mellow Dog that's my main high D and it's good. I just wonder sometimes if the...

Re: Conical bore D, and a Low F?
Looks like straight bore is it then! I'm not fixed on a low F whistle, but I'm looking for something lower and warmer and less piercing than the high D.

Conical bore D, and a Low F?
Looking for two whistle recommendations, if possible. I have a very nice Freeman Mellow Dog but I'd like to try something in D with a conical bore. I'm just recently back into whistles and rather out of the loop. Is there anything above a Clarke with wood block in quality with a warm mellow tone tha...

Mellow easy to play whistle?
Hey all! I've got a Freeman Mellow Dog and it's fun, but compared to an inexpensive Native American Flute I tried recently (made out of a river cane) it's a lot more piercing. Is it just the difference between a high D and an F# minor key, or a brass body and plastic head versus a cane? A fipple ver...

Re: Is Freeman okay?
The original poster here, just wanted to chime in and say I received my whistle, a Mellow Dog in D. Sounds great, and the USPS box had a great briefing on covid-19 precautions that Freeman taped onto it that I followed to the letter.

Re: Is Freeman okay?
For those curious, here's an update. Whistle ordered and paid for: March 3rd Tracking number created: April 21st Status: Pre-Shipment. "This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date." Current date: May 7th. I hope he's doing okay. I'm looking forward to getting the ...

Is Freeman okay?
Is Jerry Freeman okay with all this mess going on right now? I'd ordered a Mellow Dog from his listing on eBay back on March 3rd, and sent him a message on March 26, but never heard back. With everything going on I hope he's safe. Anyone know?

Carbony Whistles
Went to the Highland Games last weekend and Carbony had a tent there. Got the chance to play a few high D whistles and a low D. Very nicely constructed, nice tone too. Easy to transition into the second octave on the two high D whistles I played. The low D was the first I've ever played so I was hav...

Donncha O Briain
I found him by accident, a video on Youtube. I recognized his disease and felt a powerful connection. Where can I find more information about him beyond what's listed at this link? http://www.irishmusicmagazine.com/2011/05/26/donncha-o-briain-ceol-ar-an-bhfeadog-stain/ Is there more information out ...

Re: Clarke Meg & Freeman Blackbird
Got the Blackbird - amazing difference. Beautiful tone, flute-like, pure. It does clog up faster than the Clarke but is easily cleared. I do need to practice second octave as it isn’t as easy as the Clarke.

Re: Price, Skill and Sound
Perhaps off topic, but does circular breathing make an appearance in whistle playing? It seems some players just go on and on endlessly whereas I simply do not.

Re: Complete noob with a noob question
I'd like to know too. It might be a function of playing second octave that lets you really push air, but when I play first octave, especially D and E, I feel like I have to chop my air output to a whisper.

Re: Clarke Meg & Freeman Blackbird
I'm looking forward to it. And don't worry, I plan on a Dixon whistle in my future. It'll just be the low D. Edited to add: I ordered just in time it seems. The labium of my Meg seems to be falling apart. Maybe a casting defect but the right side seems to have bubbled up and come away from the side ...
