Re: Used Dixon whistle prices

I bought mine for about GBP17.50 brand new, wish you luck in finding one, but as above, I'm keeping mine, sorry. :D

P.S. Maybe look for 'Trad Brass' or 'Tony Dixon'.

Re: Conical bore D, and a Low F?

Depending on how much you want to pay, for a low 'D' - https://www.tonydixonmusic.co.uk/product/tenor-low-whistle-key-of-d/ (I have the non tunable, it's an easy player.) I don't know any conical low 'F' - but as above, Shearwater do a nice one at a reasonable price, whilst the MK is a great whistle...

Re: Classify a Gen Bb?

My first low 'F' was a Shearwater, it's a very nice whistle, quite mellow, but then I got the chance of an MK Kelpie, & that is a really great whistle - so you pay your money..... :D

Re: Classify a Gen Bb?

I'd be more inclined to say that low 'G' is the last size that most people can play without using pipers grip.

I've got average sized male hands & low 'F' is right on the border line for me, but more comfortable with pipers grip.

Re: Classify a Gen Bb?

I'm only a casual player, I have Generation 'Bb' x2 (brass & nickel), Tony Dixon 'A' x2 (Trad Brass & Aluminium), & a Thunderbird (aluminium) in A. Of those, I play the Thunderbird the most - the TD aluminium is now a flute, which I like to play a lot, easy player as a flute, (second oct...

Re: Good bang-for-the-buck Low-G

+1 for Shearwater, also Tony Dixon.

I've had my Shearwater low F for some time now, great whistle for the price, easy player.
I have a pre used Tony Dixon ABS low G, another easy playing great whistle, also have their Trad Brass low G too.

Re: F Flute

I have an M&E keyless 'delrin' type in 'F', nice player, quite loud, but also quite heavy - cost about £200 when bought a few years ago, not sure if you would call that top shelf....

Re: low whistles vs tenor recorder finger spacing

I used to have recorders, (sopranino/soprano/alto/tenor, all Yamaha), & from what I can remember of my tenor, my Howard low 'D' would be nearest, & it has a good tone.

Yes, thanks for posting, that was interesting, even though I'm not into ITM as such, any flute playing is always nice to listen to.

Re: Best Penny Whistle?

...or, perhaps, they may play them because they spent all that money on them.... I have bought some more expensive whistles, (mainly pre used), & whilst a couple are good, I would never have spent full price on them - & I do tend to play them more than my cheapies - but I think there ...

Re: Best Penny Whistle?

The best is the one you enjoy playing..... :D What key do you want - they come regularly from high G to low D. What material do you want it made of - brass, nickel, aluminium, composite. What are you looking for in your whistle - easy blower, hard blower, tone, loudness. As you can see, there are lo...
