Doinna

Played Uilleann pipes for a graveside burial yesterday. A Greek Orthodox priest presiding. When he told me he was from Romania I played Doinna for him. I learned the tune from John McSherry's playing. He explained that Doinna (pronounced just like it is spelled), is a Romanian lament or sad melody. ...

Re: New Tenor Banjo Forum!

OK, so I am now very frustrated with this Irish tenor forum. Who is in charge? There seems to be no contact info.

It has now been three weeks that I been awaiting approval to join.

Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: New Tenor Banjo Forum!

I signed up two weeks or so ago and have been waiting ever since for approval.

Seems like a long time to wait for approval.

Maybe it's my sorid backgound?

I hope that I get approval soon!

Re: How to sharpen the B on a chanter.

No...not that I don't like the B note or that I never play the second octave B. I just have always felt that the B note is the most curious note on the uilleann pipes in that it is so flat in comparison to oher instruments. I do play the second octave B, but I find that it doesn't come up a lot in t...

Re: How to sharpen the B on a chanter.

Hi Geoff, Thanks for your assistance. My chanter is a D made in 1998 by Charles Roberts in Sligo. My B has always seemed flat, especially in the first octave. the second octave B, which I rarely use, seems to be in tune. I realize the B is built to be so many cents flat, but.... Probably 20 cents fl...

How to sharpen the B on a chanter.

I have always wanted to ask this question.

How would one sharpen the B note on your chanter? Say the B is very flat but all of the other notes are in tune.

Any advise is appreciated.

Cheers! Richard

Re: A profound thought

Well stated Richard. You said exactly what I was trying to say. Thank you! I had the same thing happen on a St.Patrick's Day years ago. A young college student came up to me and asked is she could play my pipes. I said "no" of course but she insisted. So, I told her she could blow the air ...

Re: A profound thought

Shouldn't have used the word "profound" hey?

Maybe shouldn't have posted at all.

Touchy group.

Oh well, peace to all anyway!

I think I 'll stick to asking for advice from now on.

Back to playing the pipes.

Re: A profound thought

Wow...didn't think this was such a contentious piece. Not making any statement about feeling entitled at all. Just making a statement about being respected and paid a fair price for the service that you are providing. As far as being passionate and being able to continue performing, the payment you ...

Re: A profound thought

I take no credit. Just liked the sentiment, that's all! It attracted me because I see way too many musicians undercut themselves when asking for payment, or worse, not getting paid at all to do an event. If you play for free by choice that is fine. But undercutting your fee causes all of us to lose ...
