Re: Chris Wilkes flutes: the knack?
Well said Kmag! Set-up can make or break how an instrument feels. For flutes that is the practice of tuning and voicing, which is done by the careful shaping of the bore, tone holes and embouchure holes. I contend that the reason why my flutes and Pat's flute are so approachable vs. the Wilkes flut...

Re: Chris Wilkes flutes: the knack?
... I am simply claiming that to my chops, his flutes simply do not play as well as mine and seem stuffy and unresponsive. ... But that's not all you are claiming - you have also attributed your dislike of Wilkes flute to Chris (supposedly) getting "less practice at the necessary craft of tuni...

Re: Whistle Tuning
All of my whistles give an in-tune ET scale from the bellnote to the one-finger note in the 2nd octave (what would be Bottom D to High B on a D whistle). If a whistle doesn't do that, I'm not going to use it. In fact I can't use it, for gigs. ... All of my whistles play every note "needle stra...

Re: Whistle Tuning
Tune to the note that the whistle maker has tuned the body around - usually A440 or high D... Usually instrument makers use A440, but I definitely recall one maker advising me to tune to high D. The low D is usually a little compromised the strange Alba low C about which Stacey said I need to make ...

Re: Whistle Tuning
I don't recall where I saw the following advice, but thought I might share them anyway: 1. Tune to the note that the whistle maker has tuned the body around - usually A440 or high D. The low D is usually a little compromised but the lower frequency notes don't cause so much pain to the hearer when t...

Re: Feadóg D vs Feadóg pro
I've just measured the inner bore using a caliper. Standard brass: 12.00mm Pro Nickel: 11.48mm This is half the difference between a Bracker session bore and normal bore! Physics of acoustics: there is going to be a sound difference. The brass and nickel version probably have the same config at the ...

Re: Feadóg D vs Feadóg pro
There is definitely a difference in wall thicknesses in the photo Joshua posted, but it is quite small. I don't really see how the tube being maybe a millimeter thicker would make a huge difference in the tonal qualities of a whistle. Maybe I just need to buy a Pro and see if I can detect any real ...

Re: Feadóg D vs Feadóg pro
As I said, in my case things aren't so clear : Feadóg nickel, Feadóg Pro black over brass, Feadóg brass. All Ds. Hi Peter, sorry to be asking this. It seems that Hobgoblin and BigWhistle both lists the Feadog Pro Black as having nickel plate, which is what makes it thicker in the first place. (same...

Re: Feadóg D vs Feadóg pro
Regrettably I don't have a standard nickel D version with me right now, but here is a comparison of the Stardard C tube, Pro D tube, Standard D brass tube https://imgur.com/L6uTImV I think the picture speaks for itself. The two outer D tubes align perfectly opening to opening - so there is most like...

Re: Feadóg D vs Feadóg pro
The difference between the 2 nickel versions are immediately obvious to sight and feel. Not to me, obviously. Although i am comparing plain brass, nickel and painted (pro) versions of the tube, visually. So there may be an element of apples and oranges there. The head, the important part, doesn't a...

Re: Searching for the right Low D - for small hands?
I had an Alba F whistle which I found the right finger stretch to be as much as my low Ds from Phil Hardy and Colin Goldie... The stretch is similar for the Chieftain and the Goldie, Chieftain having slightly bigger holes but it wasn't a problem. I don't have a Dixon now but remember it being really...

Re: Generation Bb vs Dixon Trad Alto Bb
I'd suggest the Generation if you are keen on tweaking whistles yourself There is no reason to assume you NEED to alter the whistle. It will be fine as is. I didn't say one needs to alter a generation Bb. I only mean that IF one is keen on tweaking a whistle, generation is a good choice (due to it'...

Re: Generation Bb vs Dixon Trad Alto Bb
Hi there, I have a generation brass Bb which I did the warm water trick and did the simple putty tweak myself. It was a bit louder, less chiffy, and more complex before the tweak; afterwards it's purer, softer, and more chiffy - I think it became a little easier to play/control as well. The second oc...

Re: Seeking Feedback on Alba Low G
A couple people have mentioned Alba tuning issues. What was the tuning issue on the Low C? About the C# equivalent, here we're dealing with a matter of preference. It's traditional for whistles, Irish flutes, and uilleann pipes to have the C# a tad flat. For one thing, C# should be around 15 cents ...
