Re: Murray dimensions
Thanks! Definitely large, or on the large-ish side of medium. Does this put it more in the Rudall-Carte flavor of things?

Murray dimensions
I have a Murray from 2007 that love, but am considering switching things up and adding a flute by some other maker. Wh[ere do Murray flutes fit on the spectrum of bore diameter? Based on how cozy they feel to play, I'd guess they are relatively narrow? Or maybe they have thinner walls than comparabl...

Re: Ringing Chanter Sound
Thanks everyone. My ceiling fan was on high and turning it off solved the problem. I never would have even thought of that! Decades ago I bought a Rickenbacker 330 electric guitar. I spent three days messing with the setup, the strings, etc etc etc. to remove an odd ringing. In frustration, I moved...

Re: Ringing Chanter Sound
I just picked up a new reed after my last one kicked it a few weeks ago. This one is pretty much perfect, except it has this strange ringing/fast vibrato sound on every note besides the D's. It's driving me insane. I contacted the maker and it seems like it's probably a bridle problem or something ...

Re: Left or right handed?
If you were to stick to the whistle I'd say play it as is most comfortable to you, and don't fret it. But flutes and pipes tend to be directional and you would limit yourself to instruments made specifically for 'backhanded' playing. My two cents can be donated to your choice of worthy causes. Tygh...

Re: New York customs
I asked whether it's State sales tax because bagpipes are generally exempt from customs duties (taxes on imports), but not sales taxes (taxes on sales). I've been billed by Canada Border Services for chanters I've imported (or even sent to the US to be reeded, and then reimported). When I questione...

Re: Left or right handed?
Sure, the whistle has been a gateway drug for many a piper, including myself. I agree with most of the advice you have already been given; handedness doesn't matter much on the whistle, but piping right-handed will make a vastly greater number of sets useful to you. If I were in your position, I wo...

Re: Top-end Flutes?
A while ago somebody mentioned ergonomics; other than price, that is an absolutely hard, objective criteria that can make or a break a flute-to-player relationship. It's worth considering for any potential purchase. I happen to have normal-to-large hands, so stretch is not a huge deal, but it turns ...

Re: Uilleann pipes case question
I just received a protec bass clarinet case for an anticipated 1/2 set. Since my drones are still in utero, I've not had the chance to test it yet completely. http://www.wwbw.com/Protec-Bass-Clarinet-PRO-PAC-Case-541062.wwbw?source=TWWR5J1BB&cntry=us¤cy=usd&gclid=CjwKEAjwrMzHBRDW3...

New concert drones from Andreas Rogge in brass, plum, and box. https://sites.google.com/site/quadregistus/_/rsrc/1500649468864/drone-pics/20170721_102939.jpg?height=375&width=500 In a bass clarinet case. They have not been tied in yet, but that should happen soon enough. https://sites.google.com...

A few more to consider: Sam Murray (You can buy a keyless *now* online from a shop in Ireland) Terry McGee Martin Doyle Eamonn Cotter I have no idea what step each would be placed on in some ideal "Great Chain of Being." I went with a Murray because I had a friend who let me borrow hers fo...

Re: new here - Back D is flat. Solution?
I've noticed that my back D is flat. The c-hole is a little sharp so I added electric tape and that solved the problem. If I want to sharpen my back d, do I need to shave x off reed or can should I raise/lower the reed in the chanter? Thanks On my chanter, the back d pressure gradient is "back...

I have been playing for maybe two (?) months, but in the tunes I am working up, I usually do DED or Long D + finger waggle vibrato (Usually the index finger on the lower hand.)

Re: Bass bar to stock
Hi Rory, I do not wish to get into discussion on a public forum about the state of the market for new pipes and new makers because I know no more facts about it than my own situation and what other people have told me... which is then just hearsay. As my statement said " by some accounts"...

Re: Is there a flute equivalent of Martin Hayes?
Who are some other fluters like fiddlers combinations? To be honest, I know there are flute / fiddle duos that blend well together, but does that make them the flute equivalent of such-and-such fiddler? For example, Matt Molloy and Tommy Peoples played together and recorded a bit, but I would not s...
