Re: Whistle head came off wood body...has this happened to y

Thanks for the advice on the threaded tenon trick. I'd seen blogs on that, but never thought to try it. I had considered adding some cork, like on my recorders, but I've not work very much with wood and don't want to ruin anything. From what I could determine, and looking at a basic soprano recorder...

Re: Whistle head came off wood body...has this happened to y

I thought that head looked familiar. I have a few of of the Kildares myself. I just heard back from Erik, and he's offered to re-glue, but since he's going through a hurricane, I don't want to bother him with it now. I'll try the plumber's tape trick in the meantime...don't know why I didn't think o...

Whistle head came off wood body...has this happened to you?

I recently acquired a used D penny whistle made by Erik the Flutemaker. I'd played with it for a while, and today, decided to give it a good oiling because it looked like it needed it (plus I was already doing a full oiling overhaul of all my recorders, anyways). I held it by the whistle and started...

Re: Dolmetch, Mollenhauer recorders

I just looked up "bakelite recorder" on eBay (US and UK), and there are a variety of prices, but I suspect you won't get more than US$100.00 for any one of these, if even that, unless they are mint and a collector wants them. I'm curious, how do these sound compared to modern ABS plastic r...

Re: D Mixolydian

Ooo, another recorder player! Excuse the excitement, but I love knowing about people who have actually studied recorder. I never had lessons because there were no teachers available, but I've had music most of my life and did classical piano and choir, so I figured out quite a lot on my own using wh...

Re: D Mixolydian

Thanks for the correction on those minor scales...it's been a while since I studied the theory behind these, and I'd always had some difficulties with all the different minor scales. Better to check music theory resources for the proper definitions. I wanted to also point out a textbook that is stil...

Re: D Mixolydian

Yep, you're correct. It's late, and I was somehow thinking in C major. Should have checked it on the circle of fifths I linked to. Will correct it now. To be honest, I tend to either play D major or G major on my whistle. I don't know why, but it's pretty easy for me to switch from the C# to C witho...

Re: D Mixolydian

I'm going to give this a try. Might be too much, but if you get something out of it, awesome. I think it helps that I play piano because I can see everything laid out on a keyboard. I'm not going to go into anything too complex because I still sometimes have trouble remembering these things, and I s...

Re: A recorder for folk musik

Yes, the trouble with recorders for whistle players is the extra, unfamiliar holes, and the fact that we have to precisely half-hole the thumb when playing the upper octave, otherwise you get weird sounds. Also, it does take more air to play recorder than whistle because of the wider bore. I do love...

Re: Better a Moeck or Mollenhauer recorder

Yeah, that doesn't seem good at all. It's not consistent, and it's going sharp. I would try oiling it and letting it sit for a whole day, then practice 15 minutes one day, 20 minutes next day, and add 5 minutes each day of practicing until you get up to your full practice time. It may be that the re...

Re: A recorder for folk musik

It's actually possible to play semitones on the Irish whistle. I've managed to figure them out, but they can be slightly different on each of my whistles. You can use various alternate fingerings, or cover half the hole. Since we have alternate fingerings for the recorder, anyways, I try out some of...

Re: A recorder for folk musik

Hi again...I own a Mollenhauer Dream (these aren't as expensive s the Kynseker unless you get one in expensive woods). It's fairly loud and full. I got one because I wanted a soprano that would play over the sound of piano or guitar accompaniment. They also have ones that have a plastic mouthpiece a...

Re: Better a Moeck or Mollenhauer recorder

I'm glad you found a recorder that you like! And in my favorite type of wood. Since you bought the Mollenhauer used, there is a possibility that how it was stored and cared for will affect the intonation. Are the notes playing consistently flat by almost a semi-tone? That would indicate that you hav...

Re: Oiling old recorders

Hi...I just want to add that with the wax-impregnated wood recorders, especially vintage ones, I will still check the bores using a flashlight to make sure there is no dryness or cracking, or, if I can fit my pinky finger into the bore, will just physically touch inside the recorder. I have lightly ...

Re: A few plastic tenor/bass recorder questions

I don't know if you've already found a solution yet to your problem, but I just joined recently, and thought I would give you some info. I've finally invested in a bent-neck tenor to accommodate for my short arms and small hands. There is a solution to make this happen with your Yamaha here: http://...
