Re: Delrin flutes?

I recently got into the flute. Doug Tipple was recommended to me and I after 'talking' to him via email I ordered one of his delrin flutes. I didn't have anything to compare it to but i have to say it seems well made, is in tune over the 2 octaves that I use and I'm very pleased with it. I have sinc...

Re: Early learners

Me, I'm one. I've been at it for around 6 months or so. Mainly ITM I have a Tipple delrin that I take with me to work. A boxwood (?) Sweetheart and another UN named much heavier wooden flute with a tuning slide. Completely self taught so far, though i play other instruments.

Re: Holding flute comfortably

Being a piper, I started using the "Piper's grip" for both my left and right hand. Works a lot better for me. A lot less tension I've tried to finger the flute the more common way, many times. But it's so much harder to move (especially) my left hand fingers quickly. Ornaments and fast mo...

Re: Another nooobie question 'keys?'

Thanks very much for your replies. I did go for Vaseline and not for the coconut oil and the key advice has given me much to think about but at this point in my flute journey I'll stick with my keyless

Ok I'm going to take your collective advice but I'm curious as to why. Does anyone know?

Re: Another nooobie question 'keys?'

I'm going to order some 'proper' cork grease but i guess Vaseline must be pretty much the same. I think coconut oil would probably be ok too but it might get a bit runny if the temp got much warmer than it is.

Re: Another nooobie question 'keys?'

That's great. Thanks for that

One more nooobie question. I've just this second run out of cork grease. Not a biggie I can order some more and it'll be here in a week or so BUT has anyone tried coconut oil? January in Britain it's solid like a grease and I like the smell :)

Another nooobie question 'keys?'

Hello good people I'm pretty new to the flute. I bought a keyless in Delrin from Doug Tipple and am loving it. So far everything I play is in the keys of D, G or Eminor and for the music I love that's fine BUT I'm curious about why do some 'irish' type flutes have keys? Is it about improving the acc...

Re: Single Row Melodeon - do you play one?

(I will admit that my understanding of the names of the instruments was severely damaged when I learned that the Fleadh rules now contain the following bit: "Note 5: Comp 13. Mileoideon/Melodeon: The single row accordion is not a melodeon and is not acceptable in the melodeon competition."...

Re: Newbie question delrin v wood on a budget?

I think he already bought one. :) Yep, you are right. :D I change my advice to the open poster: if you can, wait to have more money to spend (about 500/600€) and buy a wooden flute. Some good makers offer very nice keyless wooden flute that fits that budget. Thanks for the advice guys. A...

Re: Newbie question delrin v wood on a budget?

When I was first starting out, I brought three flutes to my first lesson. The two-piece Dixon, the three-piece Dixon and the Casey Burns Folk Flute. My teacher didn't like the Dixon flutes at all (so it can't be just me). He did like the Folk flute a lot, though. The Folk flute is extremely easy to...

Re: Newbie question delrin v wood on a budget?

So thats a couple of perspectives on the Tony Dixon flutes. I'm too new to flutes to know for sure but I play a couple of other instruments and a good quality instrument is easier to play than a not so good one but my experience with other instruments tells me that there are no short cuts. Fortunate...

Re: Newbie question delrin v wood on a budget?

Just watched the Callum Stewart vid on you tube -very impressive. I guess it shows if you play well enough you can get a tune out of anything.
Right, back to putting in the work with my Tipple
