Re: Fife question: plastic soon, or wood much later?
My first fife was a cheapo gift shop one at Fort Moultrie. To my surprise: a) it was playable and b) I could play it. I now have an aluminum D and Bb fife from Angus Fifes and I love them. He put lip plates on his tunable models for me, no charge. I play Irish music on them like tin whistles in the ...

Re: Fife thread
I have a tuneable aluminum D fife with lip plate from Angus Fifes (custom addition - he did it cheerfully and quickly). I have a lot of fun with it. It is not a subtle instrument in any way, and I second the recommendation for hearing protection. I played it once with my hearing aids in by accident....

Re: Hall Crystal Flutes
There was just a used Casey Burns folk flute that went on this forum for a steal... As I got mine for a similar (I think?) price to the Steal referenced above, I second the recommendation. I'm primarily a whistle player and I took to the Folk Flute quite well IMNERHO with no previous flute experien...

I just ordered an aluminum Angus fife in D - I'll post how it plays once it arrives.

Re: Dumb question about low D's and finger reach
I didn't learn piper's grip until I got my Becker Low D. Suddenly now my Susato low G is a whole lot easier to play.

Re: Dumb question about low D's and finger reach
I also have a Becker Low D and though I can play it without using piper's grip, it's really uncomfortable. It plays beautifully and quickly when I use piper's grip with both hands. To compare, I also have a Low D Open Whistle and the hole spacing seems just about identical to the Becker. It's weight...

Re: Ideas for Flute Case
I use a cut-down billiard-cue case for mine ($10 at Walmart) - I can fit my low whistle and two high Ds in there with the proper spacers and padding added.

Re: My favorite note
I love the bell-tone on most instruments I play, and somehow consider it the instrument's characteristic voice even though I hit it less in playing than any others.

Spittle in the Embouchure
Ok, so I'm playing my Open Whistle, which is basically a Quena flute with Low D fingerings. It plays like a flute, which is why I'm posting here...do any of you have trouble with a little ball of spit forming on the bottom lip as you're playing? It then proceeds to do most undignified things to the ...

Re: Open Whistle
My low D came in last week ad I've been having a lot of fun with it! There's quite a learning curve on the kena style mouthpiece, and I think it's probably way more like a flute than a whistle. I'm enjoying the range of tones I can get depending on my embouchure, but I'm not a fan of how easy it is ...

I'd say that if it works it's the correct way, however that works out.

Re: I can't seem to learn tunes by sheet music..
What you say seems to be the way things generally are. I wouldn't worry overmuch.
What I have to do is listen to a tune till I get it stuck in my head, then puzzle it out on the whistle with the sheet music in front of me.
