Re: Smart phone/Tunepal aided playing at a session

I had been playing ITM for a few months when I went to my first session in Chicago at the Bistro. Bear in mind, I spent many years sight-reading for a living- broadway show books, orchestra pieces, jazz charts, etc… The session was being led by Sean Gavin and Devin Shepherd. I was having an awesome ...

Re: Testing foot joint pads on flute

If you have ACTUAL pads- here is how to seat them. If you have “Pewter Plugs,” I can’t help- talk to John Cornia or Jem Hammond. Foot joint pads (and all pads, really) are best tested with a feeler gauge. Filling a plugged foot joint with air will compress the pads and many times give you a false re...

Re: Pulling key pins

Just another helpful hint:

The spring on the key is causing upward tension on the pin- this is why the pins don’t work their way out of the block with use. Pressing down on the key at the fulcrum point will relieve that tension and help the pin to pull out easily in some cases.

Re: Learning tight embouchure

FWIW...Conal is playing an Olwell, Tom has been playing an Olwell for many years and the last time I hung out at Swifts in New York, Ivan was there playing a John Gallagher. John also happened to be there and we talked flutes and stuff into the wee hours of the morning. The point is, there are many ...

I’ve never had the pleasure of playing with Tina, but I’ve played with Keith numerous times at Daniel O’Connells. The man is a living legend! Give this recording a listen! It’s available on Amazon as well.

These are for clarinets, but our flutes most resemble clarinets in construction

Re: Anyone have an Eb flute for sale?

I had the chance to try one of the Geoffrey Ellis essential flutes in Eb at Blayne Chastain’s. Outside of an Olwell Eb which has earned the nickname “God’s Flute,” it was the best sounding and responding Eb I’ve played. He currently has them in stock on his website for $399 US. They are made from su...

Re: 6 key Hammy Hamilton for sale

Sold!

This flute is awesome. It’s actually more of a well-tempered cannon. For the first time ever, I’m playing for the whole session to hear instead of the two people next to me. That’s probably not a good thing- bring your earplugs if I’m at your session...

Thanks, Tou-che!

Re: Pad recommendation for a Hammy Hamilton flute

Tou-Che It’s pretty much impossible to tell from Blayne’s photo of a different instrument, what size your pads are. Here’s my advice for what it’s worth: Unless you want to buy bulk pads online, remove the keys, remove the existing pads (if you are capable and so inclined- you do this at your own ri...

Re: How serious are we about practicing?

This is a great thread! My perspective is a lot like Keith’s. I like to play ITM because I enjoy it. I don’t need to make any money playing it or teaching it. I don’t want to win any awards- I just really like how it sounds and feels. That being said, I have an expectation for myself of not sounding...

Re: Olwell Birthday Flute!

Conal O'Grada plays Hamilton flutes. HwaF...your argument needs more data, and less opinion. Olwells are great flutes, but there are other flutes, too. That’s funny. Last year when he was here in St Louis he was very proud of his Olwell six key blackwood flute. Says Pat finished it for his birthday...
