Playing louder
I have a feeling that when I play my flute it sounds softer than when some other people play it. I know my flute can be louder if I tried, but it seems I'm not doing something right. This problem is most noticeable in sessions where there are a lot of instruments, and I feel I am getting drowned out...

Re: Top of head joint coming loose
Yes guys, I am talking about the crown. What is basically happening is I think the crown/end cap of my flute is too loose, to the extent that it falls off when I pull it lightly. It doesn't fall off by itself, but it is quite loose. There does appear to be something brown stuck to the end of it, not...

Re: Top of head joint coming loose
A couple of things to check: The flute may be dehydrated & need to be humidified. Also check for any splitting of the end of the flute tube. Does the end cap have any thread or cork? If thread, additional wraps can be made to provide a tighter fit. If cork lapping, then either the cork needs to...

Top of head joint coming loose
I just bought a wooden flute and I am very happy with it :) However I just noticed there is one thing about the instrument that kind of unsettles me. The cap at the top of the head joint can be pulled off quite easily. There appears to be some grease on the cap. I assume this isn't a big deal as lon...

Sealing cracks
I was browsing a second hand shop today and I came across a wooden recorder. It had two large cracks in the headjoint and it was impossible to get a not out of it - presumably due to air leaking out of the head. This has got me thinking, how can cracks on wooden instruments be sealed? What is needed...

I'm selling my Tanglewood mandolin. It's a good instrument to start learning on.

Shaw Whistle - any thoughts?
I am considering buying a Shaw whistle in high D. I'm wondering if anyone here who has played it before can give me some thoughts on how they found it. From what I understand it is similar to the Clarke whistle, but slightly more expensive.

WTB: Casey Burns folk flute
Hi, I am looking to see if anyone has a folk flute they are willing to sell. I want to try playing that flute but I don't feel like ordering a new one.
I have a M&E polymer flute if anyone wants to swap as well.
I'm located in the UK, and would prefer to get in touch with people living nearby.

Holding flute comfortably
I've been playing a keyless Irish flute for 4 months now. One problem I often have is how to hold the flute without straining my hand, especially my left hand (i.e. the hand covering the first 3 holes). Any advice on how to find a comfortable hand position? I also wonder if this issue is due to my h...
