Piping Newsletter Archive

Evening all, Trying to track down an archive I found a few years ago online. It was the monthly newsletters of an American Uilleann Piping organisation, spanning from the 70’s (I think…) up to the early 90’s (again, I think). Pretty sure it was all scans of the original typed newsletters. If anyone ...

Re: Flute weight/balance/grip question

I own one flute that has this trouble - it's a short foot, keyless (well, one key - Eb) with a rather solidly built headjoint and the balance point is about an inch and a half north of where my left hand naturally supports it. Removing the crown helps a little, but it's still not comfortable. I do g...

Re: Play along with the BBC

I use Firefox, and had success using a browser extension called 'Flash Player 2021'.

Not sure if it exists for other browsers, but there's enough Flash content on the web that I'm sure Chrome and the like have their own workarounds.

Repaired crack in barrel has resumed leaking - advice?

Hi all, My flute came with a very neatly repaired crack in the barrel, which has been a non-issue for the last year or so. I recently felt that my bottom end was getting a bit weak/mushy, and set about the usual sucking/blowing/probing to figure out what was going on. Turns out the barrel is the sou...

Re: First time flute buyer

I recently bought this Protec PB308 flute case for my 8 key flute, following advice found on this board . I did have to soften the foam a bit with pliers for the flute to fit well, as suggested in the linked thread. The fit for the lower and upper sections of the body is not perfect (especially the...

Re: Consulting the Geek Oracle: QR Code Pet Tags

Not on a pet, but we trialled them at my work for a while. The idea was that if a piece of equipment went kaput you simply scanned the code with your phone and submitted a semi-prefilled defect report which got forwarded onto whoever had the unfortunate duty of repairing it. It worked reasonably wel...

Re: First time flute buyer

Regarding the McNeela case...I bought one a while ago, it's quite solid and (as you would expect) accommodates a flute nicely. It's pretty chunky though, probably around 10cm deep and there's a lot of dead space inside if you're just storing a single flute in there. Oodles better than using a pistol...

Re: Regarding a Monzani flute

I've just messaged the seller, making it clear my plans for the instrument and asking about relative volume, how easily it plays in 440, whether it requires venting on F# and E and whether he considers it a suitable instrument for ITM. It's 10am in the UK now, so hopefully I might get an answer some...

Re: Regarding a Monzani flute

I'm not quite sure what that means. If you pull the slide out a little, does that mean it would "sit between A and Bb" at a 435? Still makes no sense. I figured the same as gwuilleann, that with the slide fully closed the resultant pitch of an 'A' was somewhere between an A and a Bb (assu...

Regarding a Monzani flute

Hi all, I'm considering purchasing this Monzani flute. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Monzani-Flute-8-Solid-Silver-Keys-playing-order-c1833/265037563714?hash=item3db5784742%3Ag%3AP88AAOSwM2ZgGUHC&LH_ItemCondition=4%7C10 I've been looking for something keyed for a while; between a lack of enthusiasm...

Re: Somers Flute?

I purchased a Somers flute through Hobgoblin a few years ago, although I just checked their website and it seems they're currently out of stock. It might be worth your while giving them a call and asking if they don't have one squirelled away somewhere?

Gah, I got carried away.

Yes, it makes sense that VAT would apply to the domestic purchase too.

Re: Availability of VPipes

Have you tried shooting them a message from the website? https://www.vpipes.com/wp/contact It looks pretty up-to-date...and quite bizarrely it has their full bank details available. Maybe you're just meant to send them a random sum of money and they'll send you back some pipes? Seems like a solid pl...
