Re: Wooden Boehm flutes

A wooden Boehm flute by a living maker or firm would be very expensive and would still sound like a Boehm flute. However, there are a number of very, very good trad flute players who play Boehm flutes, tighten their embouchures and get a good Irish sound from them. Listen to Joanie Madden and Lucie ...

meaning of red, yellow, green colours in RTTA tuner app

The RTTA Tuner App for the iPhone (and I assume the app for the Android also) shows readings in three colours. I can see that red is the most 'out of tune', yellow next, and green the most in tune, but I can't find out what the parameters are for these displays. Nor can I find a user guide or manual...

Re: Rudall & Carte........ Tenor Recorder!

Thank you for posting this, Terry. The fingering chart is very interesting as it includes separate fingerings, like many traverso charts of the time, for note pairs such as D#/Eb, A#/Bb, etc. To judge from the recorded samples, however, it wasn't much competition for the 'German flute' or traverso. ...

Sorry!! I forgot about Lucie, whose playing I really enjoy. It is interesting that all three of them (Joanie, Steph and Lucie) play Miyazawa flutes. Chet

Re: "The Craft Of Flute Making Co. Cork 1980"

Thanks for finding this and posting it, Kenny. If I heard right it was just 150 pounds back then for a beautiful flute by Hammy! A shame the video of Peter Horan isn't on youtube also. RTE videos can't be downloaded for repeated viewing.

Re: What is an Irish Flute (3) - Irish Flute vs Boehm Flute - Timbre & Tone

(1) It is possible to get a sound like that of a simple-system, conical-bore wooden flute on a Boehm flute, but not many players do (and those that don't may prefer not to). I can only think of Joanie Madden and Steph Geremia on silver flutes and the young Tara Breen on a cylindrical bore wooden flu...

Re: introduction/a daunting task

It is perfectly possible to play Irish traditional music on the Boehm flute. It is a matter of learning the embouchure and the 'ornaments" (cuts, taps, rolls). There are four sources on youtube for the sound you should aim for: (1) Steph Geremia has an introductory video on youtube: https://www...

Re: four month old flute cracks

That's very sad and it shouldn't have happened. I wonder if the hygrometers are not accurate. You should put them in the open and see if they register the drop in humidity. If they don't then they are defective. The best place to buy a hygrometer is at a store that sells expensive cigars. Get a coup...

Re: Is the cap of Aulos AF3 (Stanesby Jr.) traverso removable?

I'll be damned. Kudos to you for persisting in trying to find the answer. I bought mine used, and the little piece of paper you've posted was missing. On a different topic, are you sure that it is the AF3 that is being retuned and not a different Aulos model? The intonation on the Stanesby Jr. model...

Re: Synthetic cork v. natural cork

FWIW, I notice a big difference between a rectangular embouchure and an elliptical embouchure, and I would exactly describe it in terms of resistance. The rectangular embouchure has a larger area and takes more air to fill. I find it difficult to obtain a focussed sound with the rectangular embouchu...
