Re: Conical bore D, and a Low F?

More traditional players who grew up playing a Generation or Feadog whistles seem to not like Carbony. I wonder why though. The Carbony "quiet" model comes pretty close to a "traditional" whistle in playing characteristics and sound. Just with better materials, consistency and t...

Re: Whistle advice

I like my Thunderbird C. It's mass made however. And no longer available. Maybe a "Busker" in C then?

Re: Flute Hold Right Hand Pinky

On the boehm flute (which was what I first learned but it was ages ago) the right pinky rests on the flute at all times except for a few notes. That's because it has the D# (or Eb) key to press to keep it open. If the pinky is not depressing this key, another finger of the right hand is pressing a k...

Re: Carbony Leading vs.Mezzo?

I have the leading tone session version. And a "quiet" normal Carbony to compare. The bell note is not weaker, apart from the fact that the bell note is a bit weak anyways on both because of the conical design, I assume. The session version is not that much louder but the tone is much pure...

Re: Currently listening to?

The YouTube-algorithm led me down a strange rabbit hole. So I listened so some Spiritbox, Jinjer, Lorna Shore lately. I did listen to Metal, when younger and some Hardcore. It seems there have been tons of new bands since then and even the belting and screaming got more sophisticated :D . https://ww...

Re: Flute Noob

As far as running out of breath, that’s an embouchure thing more than a bore and hole size issue. That said, if you have an undeveloped embouchure, a large bore/large hole flute will make things tougher. Just wanted to write the same :D . I don't think anyone would claim a boehm flute takes more ai...

Re: Tips on getting into the third octave

I found this to be helpful - most of these work on a keyless flute as well.

Re: Mollenhauer single key flute?

You could ask them directly as they're still in existence. https://www.mollenhauer.com/ I think they even made a few historically accurate instruments until recently and just stopped that line of production a few years back. So it might indeed be a new flute. Fulda was and still is their production ...

Re: Seeking advice for quieter and easy 2nd octave mezzo and low whistle

One of my easiest players besides the MK "Kelpie" is the Chieftain V5. Both are rather similar but the V5 is a bit quieter.

Re: Thumb hole in Burke whistles

I'd say it's still a whistle. But John Bushby, who makes the Shearwater whistles makes a recorder-whistle - plays like a recorder but sounds like a whistle. I'd call that a hybrid-instrument. It's a recorder. Doesn't sound like one though. It's a whistle with recorder fingering. Unless you wanna de...

The Ellis Essential has a taper in the head like a boehm flute to bring the octaves in tune.

Re: Thumb hole in Burke whistles

Seems to be a quote from the Burke homepage. I never use all those terms - never know what they mean, even though I play guitar and can read chords. Still most of the music theory eludes me. Most of the time I couldn't even tell the key of a certain tune even when learning classical pieces as I only...

I think that Narzog meant, you'd use the C nat for the G scale. Not that it's the 7th of that scale.

Re: Chieftain Custom Owners

I can understand why you thought it was "kind of stuffy"......here is his write-up of the whistle on his website: Smaller, softer holes, brighter tone, massive back pressre , a real joy to play. :D I had read the description of course but I didn't expect it to be that much backpressure. I...

I tried it in a store (thomann is a 20 minute drive away) - didn't much care for how it played. Felt kind of stuffy - too much backpressure. I much prefer the V5.
