Re: Proper Tempo for Dance Tunes

The main thing about slip jigs is that there's one heavy then two light beats, three times each bar. The beats are fast, so you'd only tap your foot three times per bar. Just wanted to point out that Ceann Cromtha asked about hop jigs, not slip jigs. They're not the same, amongst many musicians (al...

Re: Proper Tempo for Dance Tunes

It's three beats to the bar. Hop jigs are probably around there, but dotted quarter notes per minute, not just one regular quarter note per minute.

That said, I think 120 is a bit fast. Probably somewhere between 100 and 120 would work, leaning closer to 100 for learning, for sure.

Re: Flattening the second octave

If an experienced player has played your flute and it's definitely not the flute's problem, then I'd guess that the real issue is that your bottom octave is flat. You likely aren't blowing the bottom octave into tune correctly.

Re: Double hole whistles?

And yes, we have been reading the same discussion, and no one has even attempted to refute my argument for why extra holes are superior to keys. I think the problem is that you keep moving the goalposts, and this is a good example. The first post from you makes it seem that you mean no one has offe...

Re: “F” flute makers?

John Gallagher's are really great (best I've played, but I'm super biased). A few people play Carbony F flutes, and they're surprisingly good (albeit too thin for me).

Re: Alternate keys

My first non-D flute was a B flute to match my B pipes, and it was 8-keyed because sometimes fiddlers like playing in Gm (relative pitch) even after tuning down. The tone is an added bonus of course. Then I got an F flute, and it's a blast to play - keyless because sometimes there's beauty in limita...

Re: Anyone playing Alan Copley's delrin low flutes?

I contacted Alan a couple years ago when David had a C flute for sale to ask a bunch of questions, and then by the time I finally decided to buy it (just a few hours later), it was already sold. So I ordered a new one, paid it that evening, and had the flute in hand (made from scratch, too) one week...

Re: Pressure on the bag

Absolutely get a teacher to show you the basics ASAP.

The left arm should be steady pressure and a teacher will walk you through how to accomplish this. It's worth having one lesson right up front, even if you then take a few weeks to practice what you learned before the second lesson.

Re: Origins of Hornpipe Harmony?

Is there a commonly accepted origin or explanation for why hornpipes and related tunes seem to often feature a higher degree of mode mixture or V of V style progressions with leading tones in the melodies vs other traditional tune types? It seems like a majority of hornpipes feature these implied h...

Above recommendations are perhaps interesting for all that isn' t mentioned and makes me wonder if somehow I am living in some parallel universe. It's the last two lines in the OP which caused the recommendations, in particular: "I also would not be opposed to suggestions that are non-ITM musi...

Re: Left handed UPs

I'm pretty sure the correlation between actual handedness (ie which hand is the strong or main hand) and pipes-handedness is quite low. I'm pretty sure the left-handed pipers I know are all right-handed people, and myself and a couple other people I know who are left-handed play pipes right-handed. ...

Re: Suggestions for 8-key D flutes

I haven't seen a boehm-style footjoint from John Gallagher, but the last time I discussed pricing with him, the normal old school C-foot was an extra $1200 USD, and a 6-key flute was $3000. His prices may have risen, as that was at least a couple years ago (on the other hand the price was the same ...
