Light coloured woods do tend to darken naturally when they're oiled, even with a light oil such as almond. At least, my instruments do, and I'm careful about the amount of oil I apply. It usually only affects the bore and doesn't seep through to the outer, polished surface of the wood - at least, in...

You know you're producing good tone when you can feel, under your fingers, the air vibrating through the whole length of the tube, every note sounds equally rounded and full and you can do anything with it from 'ppp' to 'fff,' vibrato, trills, etc. Squeaks, stuffiness, airiness, harshness or flatnes...

It's not a good idea to buy and season wood yourself unless you know what you're doing. As a carver (netsuke), I had to learn the hard way. Boxwood, for instance, takes at least 4 years to season, once you've found a log that is free of knots and has a straight grain. The log's ends have to be seale...
