Re: replacing thread with cork?

I have replaced thread with cork on several flutes. Just know that typically tenons cut for thread are not as deep as for cork so the cork will be rather thin. This could cause it tear easier or wear faster. Other than that, I've had no issues.

Matt Molloy...flute?

On Molloy's album simply titled "Matt Molloy", what base key of flute is he playing? It's definitely not a "D" unless the recording is sped up or raised in pitch...or my iTunes is messed up. Is he playing an Eb?

Tune identification help

For those who have seen "The Keymaster" documentary, what is the name of the tune being played in the session at the beginning of the film?
(edit: sounds a little like the Kesh Jig but not exactly, especially the B part)

Re: Gluing the liner

I know I'm posting this too late, but in my opinion, a solvent-based contact cement is the way to go. It has all the advantages of other glues and and very few disadvantages. It applies thin, doesn't set up fast which allows plenty of time to position the piece, doesn't foam up, unaffected by moistu...

The frost is over when Paddy's kitty boils in the kettle ???

Seriously, what is the real name for this jig?
"The frost is all over"..."Kitty lie over"..."What will we do when the kettle boils over"..."Paddy's return"...
Has there ever been a more disputed tune name?

Re: Right index question

thanks for the feedback. Ive studied it some more and found Im only doing this in certain situations. Mainly when I have a fast note above the "G" and then the next note below the "G". On my flute, there is no discernible difference in tone at high speed. I dont intentionally do ...

Right index question

Does anyone else leave down your right index finger (G vent) sometimes on fast phrases? I don't do this when learning the fingering of a new tune, but once it gets up to speed, I've noticed that I often don't pick this finger up when going above it on the scale (I guess of out of laziness?). Tone-wi...

Re: complex bore of R&R flutes?

Casey, I certainly agree with your comments. In my experience, moving the head cork up to 5 mm in either direction only affects pitch slightly while it does a great deal of work on tone. I find myself adjusting the cork almost daily for tonal purposes depending on the mood my embouchure is in that d...

Re: Concering weight and balance

Rolling the head joint in does indeed help, but even at an extreme angle, it feels like if could slip out at any moment (and does eventually). Maybe I just need more practice with it. I did also note that with my original "grip",my left thumb is free up to about note G... above that is whe...

Re: Concering weight and balance

Well I’ve worked on it a lot and just about to call it impossible for me. The flute sits correctly at the bottom of the left index finger but I have to give at least a little support with the side of the left thumb while playing. I don’t need the thumb if not playing but as soon as my fingers start ...

Re: Concering weight and balance

thanks Jem. Your videos made me realize I've been using too much thumb (as Terry was alluding to). Not that the flute would sit on the pad of my left thumb, but i was squeezing the flute between the thumb and side of index finger (like really fat chop stick). I will remedy that.

Re: Concering weight and balance

Thanks for all the feedback. I have three keyless flutes and all are head-heavy.. and two of them are not lined and have no slide. I guess without the additional weight of key work and/or a long foot, the keyless is at a disadvantage in that regard. I can hold and play them without issue, but I can’...

Concering weight and balance

Just wondering what is everyone's opinion concerning weight and balance of a flute... It seems to me that the best balance point might be at the left thumb location (under C#) or just south of the head. Or is it commonly preferred to be foot-heavy to keep pressure against the lips? I have several fl...

Re: Question about Patrick Olwell flutes

anyone know what is up with Metalsmith? I tried contacting them and got no reply, and now their website is not pulling up... any other links to telescoping tubing? (Specialshapes' sizes are a little off for me and i am not setup to modify the diameters as Casey is doing.) edit: Nevermind..its back up.
